Trump seeks end of separation of church and state to push Christian values

politicsJun 27, 202615749

A Trump administration advisory body called the Religious Liberty Commission released a draft report arguing that the traditional concept of separation of church and state is a legal error and urging a shift toward "building bridges" between religion and government. The commission, filled almost entirely by conservative Christians, recommends the Justice Department adopt an "originalist" interpretation of the Constitution's religion clauses and treats religion as an "essential support" that should be injected into public life. The draft also calls for rolling back civil rights requirements for religious institutions, according to reporting circulating with the document. The document's release prompted mass protests planned for the day it appeared and drew public comment from officials such as Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, who said the Constitution does not include separation of church and state. News outlets including the Associated Press, NBC News, and others have reported on the commission's recommendations and the White House publication of the draft. The report could trigger policy changes if the Justice Department or federal agencies adopt the commission's originalist framework for enforcing the religion clauses.
