Benches emptied at Fenway after a heated on-field exchange between the Red Sox and Yankees, but play quickly resumed and the Red Sox completed the victory. Boston beat New York 6-1 as rookie lefty Payton Tolle worked seven scoreless innings, allowing one hit, issuing two walks and striking out seven. The win gave the Red Sox three straight home victories against the Yankees for the first time since Aug. 31, Sept. 2 of last year. Boston also scored six or more runs in three consecutive games, tied for their longest streak of the season. The game was part of a stretch in which the Red Sox rotation posted 64 innings and a 1.69 ERA over 10 starts, and the club improved its run differential back to plus one. After the benches-clearing moment, the teams finished the game without further incident and the Red Sox left Fenway with the decisive win.
