OpenAI previews GPT-5.6 Sol, Terra and Luna

OpenAI opened a limited preview of the GPT-5.6 family, launching three models named Sol, Terra, and Luna. OpenAI billed GPT-5.6 Sol as the most capable model for coding, scientific analysis, and cybersecurity, with Terra positioned as a mid-tier option and Luna as the smallest. OpenAI said Sol pairs those capabilities with its most advanced safety stack, including strengthened real-time protections against high-risk cyber activity and repeated misuse. OpenAI said it hardened Sol with weeks of human red teaming plus more than 700,000 A100-equivalent GPU hours of automated testing. The preview is limited to a small group of trusted partners and corporate customers at the request of the U.S. government, and OpenAI said broader public access is expected in the coming weeks. OpenAI described Sol as shifting the performance-efficiency frontier for long-horizon security tasks, including vulnerability research and exploitation.

OpenAI has unveiled 5.6! It comes with a new naming scheme, where 'sol' is the most powerful, 'terra' is the middle option, and 'luna' is the smallest. Much better than mini nano etc imo. They're starting with a preview for corps, bc of USG, and they say they don't like having to do this.

Pricing is quite good! Luna, which very much mogs sonnet it seems like (sonnet 5 soon please??? 🥺🥺🥺) at a similar (somewhat lower) cost. 5.6 mogs in terminal bench, but predictably is lower on cyber security benches, and they don't show SWE benchmarks for some reason...
