Mariana Mazzucato: 'Make people dream,' build economy for common good

financeJun 26, 20262245

Economist Mariana Mazzucato publishes The Common Good Economy: A New Compass and tells governments to "get back their mojo" and "make people dream," urging them to believe they can change the world. She argues that governments, businesses and citizens must create shared value so growth serves the common good rather than only private profit. Mazzucato calls for a remaking of economic theory and government practice around new purposes to tackle inequality and the climate and nature crises. She emphasizes investing in "shared spaces" and other collective structures as central to that project. Mazzucato contrasts market logic, which asks "What creates value people will pay for?", with democracy's question, "What serves the common good, including people who cannot simply buy influence?" Commentators praised her progressive blueprint while some criticized her continued endorsement of growth rather than a fully circular alternative.
