Carney to launch fundraising campaign for 24 Sussex restoration

Prime Minister Mark Carney is set to announce Friday a public fundraising campaign to restore or rebuild the long-vacant 24 Sussex Drive, the official prime minister's residence. The plan includes a nationwide design competition to invite Canadian firms to propose how to make the house a suitable official residence again for future prime ministers. 24 Sussex has been empty and declared uninhabitable since 2015, forcing successive prime ministers to live elsewhere. The fundraising drive is intended to help cover restoration or reconstruction costs rather than rely solely on annual government budgeting. Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre criticized the initiative, saying housing affordability makes 24 Sussex the "last thing on our minds." Officials say the next steps are launching the design competition and unveiling fundraising details; total costs and a construction timetable have not been published.
