Community Strong Australia party launches
Independent MPs Zali Steggall and Allegra Spender announced creation of a new political party, Community Strong Australia, filed paperwork and launched communitystrong.org.au while pledging "reason over rage". Community Strong Australia positions itself at the political centre and lists housing affordability, cost of living, climate change, childcare, education, healthcare and social cohesion as priorities. The party says it will remain leaderless, allow members a free vote while collaborating on policy, and its constitution gives the two founding MPs authority to approve new members. No other teal independents have joined yet; Monique Ryan and Kate Chaney have publicly ruled themselves out of joining.
#BREAKING 🚨 Independent MPs Zali Steggall and Allegra Spender have announced the formation of a new political party, which will be called 'Community Strong Australia' No other teal independents have joined, with Monique Ryan and Kate Chaney so far already ruling themselves out
Not sure it's a smart move in the long run. Independents can promote policies to the betterment of their communities. Party MPs = constrained by "party" policy. Ppl increasingly want that local voice.
Will be interesting to see how it goes and if they can still maintain community direction and a party format. LibLab funding deal which advantages parties not pure independents made it necessary imho.
The most centrist name for a party I can imagine
Independent MPs CHOOSING to work together in Parliament for the common good carries more moral weight than a political party imposing party discipline upon members and eventually running candidates against its former allies. A huge mistake.
