Investigation: apartment renters face rising tide of fees

The Guardian investigation found renters in Greystar-operated apartment buildings across multiple U.S. states charged unexpected add-on fees, including "boiler management", "variable refrigerant flow", "solar rebill", and "lifestyle" fees. About 1 million U.S. households live in Greystar apartments, some leases list as many as 125 separate add-on fees, and tenants describe surprise charges such as a $150 application fee for a unit that was not available. Tenants and lawsuits in several states call many of these fees inflated, illegal, or predatory, Greystar denies wrongdoing, and advocates say the charges shift costs out of advertised rent and worsen housing affordability and enforcement of rent rules.
