European Research Council names 319 ERC Advanced Grant winners
The European Research Council awarded 319 Advanced Grants in 2025, selected from 3,329 applicants. Each grant typically funds up to €2.5 million over five years; funded projects include quantum physics (Georgios Katsaros’s SPINSWAP), brain organoids (Jürgen Knoblich’s CASCO) and humanities work such as Rick Schulting’s Stocking the Past. This was the ERC’s first Advanced Grant round after it doubled mobility funding for researchers outside the EU, and 62 winners will carry out work in the UK, 46 in Germany and 32 in Switzerland. The awards channel long-term support into high-risk, high-reward research, attracting global talent to European institutions and shaping priorities across quantum technology, neuroscience, climate science and the social sciences.
