Voters in New York and Maryland are heading to the polls Tuesday in competitive congressional and state primaries; New York polls are open until 9:00 PM ET and Maryland polls until 8:00 PM ET. In New York, an unusually contested slate of House primaries pits Zohran Mamdani-aligned progressives against AIPAC-backed and other outside-backed opponents, and by 6:00 PM, 420,527 New Yorkers had already cast ballots, surpassing the city’s August 2022 total of 352,000. In Maryland, voters are deciding nominations for state legislative seats and the gubernatorial primary in several tight races that could shift control of the state legislature. These outcomes matter because nominees will shape which Democratic factions control key congressional seats and state policy, and turnout plus outside spending could set the political terrain heading into November.
