National Indigenous Peoples Day, Canada marks 30th anniversary on solstice

cultureJun 21, 20261035,720

Canada marked the 30th National Indigenous Peoples Day on June 21, the summer solstice, with ceremonies, cultural events and educational programming nationwide honoring First Nations, Inuit and Métis. Communities staged morning Sacred Fire ceremonies at Biidaasige Park in Toronto, museum programs in Nanaimo, and free concerts such as POP Montreal’s Cabot Square show to spotlight Indigenous languages, art and traditions. Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow used the occasion to proclaim June Indigenous Peoples Month and to highlight local events and programming. The day centers both celebration and accountability, urging public engagement with reconciliation, treaty obligations and efforts to address historic harms from residential schools.

Indigenous Peoples mapped this continent thousands of years before Europeans arrived. Today, Diana and I visited the Nanaimo Museum to learn more about the rich histories, cultures, and languages of Indigenous Peoples — and their enduring contributions to Canada.

After cutting the budget to them and not consulting them unless you wave a carrot of housing and water before they in exchange for their resources! How many reserves lack adequate housing and clean water?! Too many.

Our museums are filled with many wonders and lessons. THANK YOU for continuing the Canada Strong pass❤️

It is not enough to acknowledge Indigenous Peoples, we must involve them in all decisions relating to Turtle Island, and respect their stewardship of the land.

…a lot of jaded, naysayers trolling the PM Thankfully even moderately intelligent people can see who Mark Carney is… …the foreign meddlers and disgruntled right wingers will tell you he’s the devil As a center-left liberal, he’s doing exactly what I voted for…

The majority of people see through the politician facade. Actions > Words If you want us to believe you, prove yourself.

Don’t pretend you care about indigenous people. You’re happy to throw them under the bus to continue your environmental destruction while fellating the billionaires. You are happy to insult a dying woman from the mercury poisoning on her reserve. You are a fraud. Go fuck yourself.

Talk is cheap come to Alberta and standup against all of the racism coming from Danielle Smith and the UCP.

It's not rocket science. As a Canadian and naturalize US citizen, Indigenous people inhabited Nort America. Then, Europeans came over and "discovered" North America, and stole the land from the Indigenous peoples. And massacred a lot of them. End of my Ted Talk on the history of North America.

“Mapped”? Fuck you, Mark. They lived here.

lookingforstuff.bsky.social6

Thanks! Those indigenous people are my ancestors, and they passed their genetic code to me. I’m descended from them and the Hawaiian men who Kamehameha sent to the Pacific coast who helped build BC, Washington and Oregon. I honor them daily

he thinks the average canadian is ignorant and also very very stupid

Welcome to Vancouver Island, Prime Minister!

Qtain P. Faulkes5

Just a reminder, an international body found Canada is still committing genocide against its indigenous population. You and your government just removed legislation from a bill that would have given them the human right to clean water. So spare me your 'rich histories' bullshit.

🇨🇦 Astral Slaughter 🇨🇦5

Back them up in alberta then.

Mir Bahmanyar5

Such performative bullshit from you while you fuck them over for your oil and mining crap.

artison Guardian of the Strategic Ice Reserve5

We have treated Indigenous people poorly. We should make room for them and their ideas.

HL Eisthen, defective human product3

Mapped? Like, they were visitors just surveying the place? Really??

Astrid St-Lambert3

Do something to protect the 11 Native Languages; it’s urgent.

Did you provide clean drinking water and a promise to respect treaties particularly when it comes to future oil pipelines?

Kimba2

Must have been an amazing time. Thank you for sharing.

James Roberts2

So protect the land we stole from them!

☭Comrade Internet☭2

You literally don't think indigenous people should have rights, fuck off into a Budd Dwyer impersonation ASAP you repulsive fucking goof.

The first maps of this land were carried in stories, languages, and generations of knowledge. @jimvanallen.bsky.social
