Survey finds two-thirds of EU citizens back UK rejoining bloc

newsJun 21, 2026602,854

A Europe-wide survey found about 66% of EU citizens support the United Kingdom rejoining the European Union, and that backing extends to many voters who normally back far-right and Eurosceptic parties. Regional breakdowns show Scotland backing rejoin 70% to 20% oppose, Wales 59% to 33% oppose, and England 54% to 36% oppose. When asked about rejoining without the UK’s former opt-outs, Scotland still backed membership 51% to 33% while Wales and England opposed it 44% to 37% and 44% to 34% respectively. The widespread pro-rejoin sentiment matters because it signals continental willingness to restore closer UK ties and could shape future negotiations over trade, free movement and Northern Ireland if UK politics shifts.

I guess we can take some satisfaction in the fact that his Brexit gambit may have destroyed the country, but at least it destroyed him too. From PM to middle-influence X account, with no prospects, trawling for engagement.

Boris Johnson

A decade after Britain's momentous Brexit vote, any politician would have to be out of their tiny mind to campaign for Britain to rejoin the EU

Johnson was responsible for 10s of thousands of deaths. He missed 6 (I think) Cobra meetings to sort out his divorce & we all know what he did in lockdown. Starmer is as dutiful as Johnson was idle & both hit the rocks. Is there some parallel or lesson in mythology for these 2, Alex?

Dawny B14

You’d think he’d have gone to Trumpland.

MrMirth13

He just wants to keep his £1 million a year job as a Daily Mail hack. So he gives them what the bosses want, ie anti EU, pro Brexit nonsense.

Tarquin13

Shame he made himself so much money, but as far as politics & credibility go, he's finished.

Gruff Billy 312

If not for this Russian-backed act of treachery, the Shag Yeti should be in prison for his negligent mishandling of COVID-19.

elmilligano8

Ultimately it destroyed him to a certain extent but it also gave him what he always wanted which was to be PM which he was entirely unsuited for. He also seems to have done very well financially out of it all. There was a lot of upside for him.

Katharine Kite 7

Still waiting for his imprisonment for criminal negligence and malfeasance in public office So important to have something to look forward to

DJBurges7

Why isn’t he in jail though

Denise6

He is an idiot who should have been anywhere near government. Unfortunately some idiots now expect all PMs to have what they think is “charisma” but in reality is an over inflated sense of self importance/superiority. He has a lot to answer for🤬

isosolies.bsky.social6

This useless tosser didnt even believe in Brexit, he thought he'd never win the referendum and he only used it to try and gain favour with the Tories Eurosceptic wing. Him and and that snake Gove.

MillyMia 🇨🇦🇪🇺💙🌻6

Starmer should vote to release the full interference report and end FPTP as a parting gift

msonemenone.bsky.social6

Boris Johnson was/is the biggest indictment against this country. We knowing elected a known liar and fraud.

Grumpy5

Well I scrolled down and down and down over on X and couldn’t see 1 voice of agreement 🤷‍♂️

Vera Fang4

The man will grift millions from gullible rich twats until the day he dies. As long as he's making money, he won't give a fuck what he's doing for it.

Barry4

I would pay good money for that bus to reverse over the fat oaf

Innocent🕷Abroad4

But he's also enriched himself considerably & still has his punditry, & I think he's content to go back to being mostly comic relief under those circumstances.

Grumpy4

He should be in prison.

Utter Flannel4

Not enough destruction for the binbag of racist blancmange. We can do better.

Cheshire Dog Lady - Shadow Minister for Dog Wrangling4

What really irritates me is that he's made a shed load of money since he was ignominiosly booted out.

Ferrick Brick3

Johnson epitomises the loser. A mediocre man in every way.

Iain3

It is the only real Brexit benefit, shame it hasn't yet destroyed the Tory Party too.

Pete Howe3

Burnham’s speech when he won the by-election said he wanted Makerfield to become synonymous with a change in UK politics… Perhaps Makerfield / 10th anniversary of Brexit will mark the moment when leading UK politicians are finally honest with voters and admit that Brexit is a disaster for the UK?

Mojumi2

Don’t forget, he played a pivotal role in destroying the Tory party, too.

peteferg2

He still thinks he's going to make a triumphant return for his finest hour when England's need is greatest 😐

Ludlow Mortimer2

Cough, cough ... well actually it was Chris Pincher, and partygate and generally being a sleazeball that ended Johnson's tenure in Downing St. Interestingly nobody (other than us hardcore Europhiles) was calling for him to resign because Brexit was a failure.

Alan Read2

So many tombstones to drag Big Dog down. He is trying to cleanse but... Cold War Steve helps us with his artwork based on this photo...

Lynn Bird2

He chose what he thought was best for Boris and he got that wrong too.

David Walker2

Even the photo of him doesn’t provide proper context - that’s from the 2019 General Election.

Why would they have to be “out of their tiny minds to campaign to rejoin the EU”, Johnson? Because it would mean holding you to account for all the lies you told and the damage you’ve done? Yes. I think that’s it, isn’t it, you absolute piece of shit.

@europeanbriton.bsky.social

As every day passes we’re all poorer outside the EU. Most Britons are now pro EU. Burnham’s top priority should be to map out with the EU, a democratic pathway giving Britain the option to rejoin. No more dithering! It’s crucial to our prosperity and security. #RejoinEU Today’s Observer:

In other news I’ve met 4 people this weekend who were ardent Brexit voters & all 60s & early 70s. All 4 now feel enormous regret & want us to go back in. But most of all they feel embarrassed that they fell for all the lies & the con. It’s only 4 but I bet this is going on all over the UK. #Rejoin

I'm not sure I can forgive them. I haven't forgiven my own brother yet.

Alison Denham7

I am speaking for all those in their 60s & 70s who did not vote for Brexit & wouldn’t even have considered voting for Brexit. Also not a monarchist or a Tory. Some of us are capable of independent thought & resent being lumped with a group of uninformed voters.

Betblu6

I hope so - just heard Ali Miraj on @lbc saying it will never happen as Makerfield constituents wd feel betrayed! He’s such a RW gaslighting stooge!

Fine Leg🏏3

Amongst friends/work colleagues, mostly in their 40s, there were 6 who'd happily voted brexit. One of them had spent 3yrs travelling/living in France with her children ten yrs earlier, had a great time. I was shocked when she told me she'd voted brexit. One nursing colleague had a house in France.

Rich3

I’ve seen a similar trend in my Brexit-voting relatives. A gradual migration from gloating, to silence, to tacit acceptance that it was an error, and quite recently, acknowledging they were conned and feeling embarrassed.

Gillian Rodgers2

I’m sure you are right. Even those who swallowed all the hype now know they are worse off and we are vulnerable.

death2extremists.bsky.social2

I was angry with these people for believing the lies, never felt that way about anyone else who was scammed? I’m not sure that anger serves any purpose now, and it might even act as a barrier to those who might otherwise tell their story. Their change of heart can be more persuasive than a rejoiner.

Gareth Thomas2

I hope you told them they should own it

Bridget PJ Cousins2

I’m nearly 70 and I voted remain as did many of my friends. And my then 90 year old Dad phoned us all up and asked which way the family wanted him to vote as it would affect the grand and great grandchildren most. We all said Remain. It’s not the age group , it’s the mindset that votes.
