Transport secretary Heidi Alexander urges Keir Starmer to set a departure timetable

newsJun 19, 2026441,052

Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander has urged Prime Minister Keir Starmer to set a timetable for his departure, the Financial Times reported. Alexander made the call after Andy Burnham’s victory in Makerfield, becoming the latest cabinet minister to press for a formal exit schedule. Her intervention raises pressure on Labour to outline a transition plan and could prompt a leadership contest if Starmer does not agree to a timetable.

Keir Starmer is now considering resigning after Cabinet Ministers called for him to step down He'll come to a decision with his wife and family over the weekend

Burnham won't be a patch on Starmer on the international stage, imo. Starmer has improved our relationships brilliantly. AB will have the same financial constraints. Things take time to fix. The RW rags will still come for whoever is PM. Labour need to use their majority to reform the media.

Karen by name not nature! 📎 🦋36

If he goes he would make an amazing Foreign Secretary. Mahmoud should be binned😡

Tracey13

Bastards. They wouldn't even be there if it wasn't for him. The chaos will really start if he goes and they'll be back where he dragged them from. Opposition

Nation of Stupids12

Well I’m telling him to talk to the 60% of Labour MPs who have supported him to date and ask them to continue until his term is complete. A change of leader now will lead to a rapid and disastrous general election for the Party.

harrisonjan.bsky.social9

Oh I so hope not!

Jane Harbison9

No he mustn’t Burnham must be held accountable The members should have a vote

Annette Molesworth9

Please don't. I don't vote Labour unless it is the only anti Tory et al vote, but he really has got so much done since his election. Or what have I missed?

Running away to avoid a fight? To be fair, that would fit rather neatly with Starmer's entire time in office: unambitious, risk-averse, lacking vision, strategy and any real sense of direction.

So we get Starmer-bot 2.0 Burnham or anti trans Streeting?

Dame Rainbow Warrior5

If Starmer goes, so do I. I can't believe the stupidity of some parts of the Labour Party. I could weep.

fatbobsteve.bsky.social4

And you know this how?

William Mc4

I lent Labour a vote at the last GE but I doubt it will happen next time. They seem to conveniently forget why they were elected and start prevaricating over the unimportant stuff.

Suziey333

Don't think he should go just yet unless he's leaving them in the shite they deserve

tanders24.bsky.social3

The media win! The steamroller will now move on to Burnham

nearsighted.bsky.social3

What, Starmer will actually make a decision 😂😂

The Teasel3

Starmer has handled Trump brilliantly- but he’s believed the Epstein et al gang. I feel for him- I feel he’s a decent man with a great skills set- but my heart knows we need a leader who’s strong enough to not feel he has to attend parties given by the likes of Murdock.

Stephen Old2

Thanks for the info. I thought he might do that. The press and TV news will hound him out. He can only take so much of that pressure.

Tammy the Cat 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿2

Brought down by the Mandelson scandal really. Let's hope Burnham marks the end of the Blair/Mandy years (decades!) of sleazy influence and control of Labour

LawrieBhoy 🍀2

I’m sure he’ll do what’s best for the country. Won’t he?

Hazza2

The Labour Party is toxic at the moment

Coolhandluke2

Monday morning lectern outside number 10? He might like to stay on till conference when the new leader is announced. Maybe he will have a break, with an eye on Foreign Secretary at some point in 2028? GE still 3 years away.

"Over the weekend" A bit of a pisser if his kids already got him gardening gloves for father's day

Holly Brigstocke13

For Starmer's behaviour over the Gaza genocide and his abuse of trans women and girls including his covering up of his pushing kids to suicide among many other sins his future needs to be a cell in the Hague.

Diamanda Hagan9

Poor guy will have to destroy the lives of powerless minorities as a hobby instead.

Putin, the Funking Barsteward6

The writing is on the wall, written in capitals. It's just a matter now of when he declares he's going.

sbarlster6

Westminster leaders don’t last long! @number10cat.bsky.social how many PMs you chased out?

Barry Parmegiana5

What a great start to the weekend!!

Maddie (delicious, nutritious)4

Oh come on. It's not like he was any less useless and pathetic before all this.

tomhchristensen.bsky.social3

Impossible. He did exactly what Matt Yglesias promsed is a perfect political strategy.

Miley Crisis. ✨3

I'm not sure if Keir Starmer is capable of making that decision, maybe somebody should make it for him

NAS Miramar3

Sorry, what you mean is Starmer has to consult with his benefactors about the best way forward while hanging on to power. Labour have to clean house and remove the yes men/women from the party that are owned by the wealthy. Purge the right wing from the party.

David Henningham 郭大衛 🏳️‍🌈 🏳️‍⚧️ 💖💛💙2

To put it in Grand Designs terms, Starmer got the huge loan for the build, got into disputes with the (racist) neighbour, stalled in a boggy field. He's then tried to project manage it himself and lost the confidence of his family. The wife can hear wedding knells. He's got to make a tough decision
