Jamie Varley has been given a whole-life order after being convicted of sexually abusing and murdering his adopted son Preston Davey, aged 13 months. Varley, a teacher, and his partner John McGowan-Fazakerley inflicted sustained physical and sexual abuse on the child; McGowan-Fazakerley was sentenced to 25 years in prison. Judges ruled Varley must spend the rest of his life behind bars, and authorities have opened a child safeguarding practice review into how the adoption and monitoring failed. Foster parents and child protection experts say the case exposed serious safeguarding gaps and are calling for tighter checks on adopters and better oversight of vulnerable children.

True. But it should be. The prison system has a duty of care to all the inmates, no matter how bad their offences. Their punishment is to be deprived of liberty, not to be beaten/stabbed to death in the shower. Prison governors should be charged & jailed whenever an inmate is killed or injured.

I have just read the details, horrifying. I hope that there isn't an unnecessary backlash against gay adoptive parents. The backlash has to be once again against the social services that didn't do their job and vet thoroughly. These two were evil regardless of their sexual orinintatation.

An absolutely horrendous case, I see, is being used to suggest checks weren’t made because the couple were gay and naturally a lot of disgusting comments where people are being homophobic. Apparently gay men shouldn’t be parents. What about all the abusive heterosexuals then?
