Waxing crescent moon joins Venus, Jupiter and Mercury at sunset

On June 17 a thin waxing crescent Moon appeared in the western sky after sunset alongside Venus, Jupiter and faint Mercury. The Moon crossed the Beehive open star cluster and, from some locations, the lunar disk occulted Venus, the first of three occultations this year. The close grouping made a striking twilight target for binoculars, cameras and casual stargazers, offering a chance to see four worlds and a star cluster in one view.
