TCM Party screens The Towering Inferno, part of disaster-movie spotlight
TCM is screening the 1974 disaster film The Towering Inferno tonight at 8:00 p.m. ET / 5:00 p.m. PT as part of its Spotlight: Disaster Movies series. Directed by John Guillermin and starring Paul Newman, Steve McQueen and William Holden, the 2 hour 45 minute film follows a grand-opening party at the world’s tallest building that becomes engulfed in flames after an electrical mishap. The movie features Maureen McGovern’s song "We May Never Love Like This Again" and showcases practical 1970s special effects. It is included in TCM’s month-long, 24-film disaster spotlight airing Wednesdays in June, a good opportunity to revisit a classic big-budget ensemble disaster picture.
Tonight on TCM #TCM THE TOWERING INFERNO (1974) Nothing says 1974 like this blazing disaster movie. I saw it when it came out. I was 16, Even then I knew it was silly but fun entertainment.🎥
Lots of top flight performers stole paychecks sleepwalking through that production. Right around the time Faye Dunaway, one of the actors, starred in 3 of the best movies ever made: Chinatown, 3 Days of the Condor, and Network, which also starred Inferno alum William Holden.
Another 70s kid who thrived on disaster movies . . . While I much much much prefer POSEIDON ADVENTURE, Richard Chamberlain gets the greatest Irwin Allen death ever.
I recently saw it on a modern television and a lot of the special effects still hold up.
I was weaned on 70s disaster films. If an Oscar winners life was imperiled, I was in the audience.
Bobby Brady's giant 70's headphones.
I believe it was based on this, in my iBooks library but haven’t read yet.
We’re going to need a bigger hose.
I'd keep an eye on your head of security...
Featuring a second completely forgettable Oscar-winning song performed by Maureen McGovern (The Morning After from The Poseidon Adventure was the first).
This had a run of about 3 months at my local cinema when I was a kid, I must have seen it 6 times at least lol🇬🇧
I remember this vividly because it was a big deal on how they listed the actors names. McQueen is first and Newman’s is higher. Apparently, this was a big deal since they both wanted to be first. This was the compromise.
Yes, think it’s been that long since I last saw it.
