South of Midnight was the kind of game that wasn't going to sell a bunch of copies, but it was a portfolio-builder to go "Hey, you should get an Xbox and Game Pass." And it was probably greenlit as exactly that. Then in the timeframe between concept and release, Xbox entirely changed strategies.

There are two overlapping issues at play Xbox has seriously lost the console war Game Pass is a giant gaping wound in the side of Microsoft Studios Closing studios doesn't fix either of these, it just makes them think they can keep shoving money into those bonfires.

amazing how xbox hedged all their bets on their game pass service that inherently lowered the value of their games and has been scrambling closing all the studios they acquired to bolster said service because they aren't making money. masterful gambit. there will be books written about this

Games like South of Midnight, Keeper, and Hellblade are the reason why I own an Xbox and subscribe to Game Pass. Without these studios (and the talented people behind them) Xbox is nothing.

Game Pass was the future, bought a roster of studios to make exclusives. Xbox One X delivered the promise and Project Scarlett had the heat. Gears, Halo, & Forza could fund smaller, curated AA games to fill game pass. They got the studio to make the "playstation" game everyone wanted. So, so, naive.

People legit fell for it from day one I recall listening to some podcast in awe that they were discussing game pass plans or the 2027 games lineup, like y’all realize everyone under Xbox is about to perish right

I remember so many colleagues cheering Xbox on when they went on a massive acquisition spree 2018-2023. I guess it was okay because "Elder Scrolls 6 will come to Game Pass" though 🤔
