David Hockney, painter of California pool scenes, dies at 88
David Hockney, the British painter famed for sunlit Los Angeles pool scenes and flattened perspectives, died at 88 at his London home on Thursday, his publicist said; he passed away peacefully. Hockney made iconic works such as Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures) and A Bigger Splash and helped define the 1960s Los Angeles sensibility with bright acrylics and inventive compositions. Portrait of an Artist sold for $90.3 million in 2018, setting the auction record for a living artist, and Hockney expanded painting into photography, stage design and digital iPad drawings. His long career changed how artists portray light, space and ordinary life, making him a central figure in modern British and Californian art.
Goodbye David Hockney. What a legend. His paintings blew my mind when I was a teenager, studying art. And they still do. Human creativity is amazing and he took it to an apogee.
I worked for over 20 years at Salts Mill in Saltaire on the floor above his gallery. I visited his gallery on numerous occasions and every time his paintings lifted my mood. What a talent!
Salts Mill in Bradford is well worth a visit if you are a fan of Hockneys work.
