Washington National Opera sues Kennedy Center for $17M

The Washington National Opera filed suit against the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, seeking more than $17 million that WNO says the center refused to return after the companies severed their long partnership. The complaint says the money includes donor-restricted donations and endowment assets, singling out a disputed roughly $300,000 bequest donors intended solely for WNO. WNO separated from the Kennedy Center earlier this year amid leadership and governance upheaval, and it says the withheld funds have strained the opera company's finances as an independent organization. The case matters because its outcome could determine whether major performing-arts centers can retain donor-restricted endowments when resident companies break away, affecting fundraising and governance across the sector.
