NOAA says El Nino has formed and is expected to strengthen

scienceJun 11, 2026631,682

NOAA confirms El Nino has formed in the equatorial Pacific and expects it to strengthen, likely peaking in the November to January period. June forecast probabilities show more than a 60 percent chance of a very strong El Nino for October to January, and NOAA warns it will raise the odds of record global temperatures while shifting rainfall patterns worldwide. Very strong El Nino events increase flood risk in parts of the Americas, reduce rainfall in Australia and Indonesia, strain water and food supplies, and raise disaster-response and economic costs globally.
