BBC cancels Doctor Who 2026 Christmas special; Russell T Davies exits
The BBC canceled the planned 2026 Doctor Who Christmas special and announced showrunner Russell T Davies and production partner Bad Wolf are stepping away. The broadcaster said the decision was made "after careful consideration" and "has not been taken lightly," while stressing Doctor Who remains an important part of the BBC. With Davies exiting and the holiday episode scrapped, the franchise now faces a gap in leadership and scheduling ahead of 2026 that will shape casting, creative direction, and future programming plans.
Welp. Russell T Davies is out at Doctor Who, this year's Christmas special is canceled, and the franchise will have to start over yet again. The Davies 2.0 era was mostly a mess, other than Ncuti's performance, but still. Very tenuous days.
Between this, the Disney deal ending, etc., this is the most precarious spot Who has been in since before Davies revived the show in the 2000s. And I wonder if whoever eventually succeeds RTD will decide to deal with the Billie Piper of it all or just start over completely from scratch.
Now that it’s all in the past, I feel confident in declaring the Capaldi Era the modern equivalent of the Tom Baker Era. Truly a golden age.
▶️ "The BBC will put Doctor Who out to competitive tender this year." ▶️ "The BBC, Russell T Davies and Bad Wolf have collectively decided not to go ahead with the previously announced Doctor Who Christmas episode." ▶️ "We are choosing to push forward to invest in the long-term future of the show."
Appreciate my Doctor darn it 😸
American here: no matter the bid, do not use a US studio. The TARDIS will be powered by AI and a bible, Daleks will be the heroes, all lead characters will be straight white men, and companions will be blond women with plastic surgery and breasts that inflate whenever the sonic screwdriver is used.
I mean… at least we won’t get the weird Rose Doctor nostalgia turn? It’s like some fan somewhere got hold of a monkey’s paw.
Yikes, wasn't that Xmas special shooting ?
There's no thanks nor praise to be found from the BBC as Russell T Davies and Bad Wolf withdraw and Doctor Who Christmas special plans are scrapped. cultbox.co.uk/news/headlin...
Such a shame they didn't just keep the original ending of the last series and just leave us with The Doctor out there having adventures
What a travesty. This, along with people cancelling their classic collection box sets due to the AI slop, does paint a dismal future.
If there was no prospect of a new series I think we absolutely would be getting the Christmas special to wrap it up. bsky.app/profile/lilb...
OK, this is the last thing I'm saying on this: note the line in the press release that says the tender is "in line with the BBC’s Charter and Agreement requirements". This is how the BBC works now: they *have* to put the properties they own out to tender. www.bbc.co.uk/mediacentre/...
Your trust in the BBC here is... worrying.
I don't think so somehow. When Doctor Who does end (and I'm not saying that that is happening now) I reckon it will be with a never-ending hiatus that peters out, not a grand finale.
MY AGENT LIKES MY NEW THING I AM ALL CAPS RELIEVED. Now I can devote my mental energy to the very important question of who is my fantasy Doctor Who showrunner now this news is out... deadline.com/2026/06/doct...
Okay, hear me out… Jordan Peele.
Also, showrunner wise, I think Georgia Tennant could be great but won’t do it. Left field idea, Leslye Headland who worked on Russian Doll
For me I would love: 1. Total unknown with a completely fresh, different take 2. Grant Morrison 3. My friend @theatrekallum.bsky.social who is my DW expert (and an amazing creative)
