The Storm Prediction Center issued Mesoscale Discussion 1047 on June 9, 2026, saying there is an 80 percent chance a severe thunderstorm watch will be needed for portions of extreme northeastern New Mexico, far southeastern Colorado, and northwestern Oklahoma. The MCD lists the most probable threats as tornadoes with winds up to 90 mph, hail 1.00 to 1.75 inches in diameter, and damaging wind gusts of 65 to 80 mph. Those parameters point to rapidly intensifying supercells capable of producing destructive wind, large hail and tornadoes, so residents and emergency officials in the warned area should prepare for a watch, monitor local warnings and be ready to shelter.
