Louise Arbour installed as Canada's 31st Governor General

Louise Arbour was sworn in at Rideau Hall as Canada’s 31st governor general in an installation ceremony attended by Prime Minister Mark Carney and outgoing governor general Mary Simon. Arbour is a former Supreme Court justice, former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, and led war-crimes prosecutions at international tribunals. Prime Minister Mark Carney told the ceremony that the governor general is the guardian of the constitution and urged respect for democratic institutions. Arbour’s appointment brings a high-profile human-rights and rule-of-law voice to Rideau Hall as Canada defines its role on the world stage.
