Professor Richard Scolyer, the 2024 Australian of the Year and renowned melanoma pathologist, has died aged 59 after a multi-year battle with aggressive brain cancer. Scolyer volunteered to be 'patient zero' in a radical experimental treatment to fast-track research on his tumour and accelerate options for future patients. He used his illness to advance melanoma diagnostics and therapies, and in a final open letter urged Australians to 'pursue their dreams and passion with humility, love and compassion.'
