Mighty Cuphead Adventure built as a Sega Master System game
Studio MDHR announced Mighty Cuphead Adventure, an 8-bit Cuphead spin-off built to run on the Sega Master System. The team is programming the title in assembly language so it will run on real Master System hardware, will be sold as a physical cartridge, and a version playable on modern PCs is also planned. Studio MDHR is simultaneously developing a separate hand-animated Cuphead game, offering both a retro-styled release and a new traditional entry. Releasing an authentic Master System cartridge is a rare technical feat that showcases retro hardware craftsmanship and appeals to collectors and preservationists.
what do you mean the new 8 bit cuphead game is being programmed in assembly for the sega master system??? thats fucking crazy. a brand new sega master system game was announced at the summer game fest 2026
releasing it physically for master system might actually be a crazy great way to capture the brazillian market
The weird thing is more that they are making it for the Master System and not the Genesis/Mega Drive.
As a Master System kid, this is fucking hilarious. They better do a physical release with the grid paper background and shit art to make it truly authentic.
hell yeah, im down for more games targeting old systems. especially since pretty soon 8kb of RAM is all most of us are gonna be able to afford.
MDHR, you absolute fucking freaks (affectionate).
i thought i just made that part up omg thats rly fucking cool actually
@stopskeletons.bsky.social New Punching Weight Confirmed
imagine if they made it 3d, since the master system had the capability and 3d shutter glasses as an accessory.
Damn Cuphead devs, didn't know you were cool like that
Here I was hyping up the Saturn when the Master System is still going like the Energizer Bunny! YOU MUST PLAY SEGA SATURN!
I wonder how many Genesis model 1s and Power Converter Base add-ons are still in the wild?
Any chance they’ll give it FM sound compatibility? The default PSG sounds fine but more options is always cool
more Monster Boy 3 than I originally suspected!
Time to buy a Master System (or Power Base Converter maybe)
This also kinda means a new Game Gear game if you have the Master Gear Converter 👀
Ok but if they do it in assembly and release it both for PC and Master system, will the PC version just be emulated or are they mad enough to just do two versions of the game in assembly ?
Hope there’s a Game Gear port!
The fuck?! Mighty Cuphead Adventure is a SEGA Master System game?!

That just seems like a lot of work for very little practical gain? See also the recent [unsuccessful] mega drive game kickstarter: www.kickstarter.com/projects/107...
This announcement is sick but fuck me this reads like AI lol "All the unique limitations of a 1980s video game studio" oh sick, ya whippin out the floppies for this one?
I'm hoping for a physical release I can throw on my SMS, or even a .SMS file I can throw on my SMS.
8 bits is enough for fun to happen!
This is amazing. I saw "8-bit console" and figured it HAD to be a NES ROM because why would you do anything else? Instead they're doing a physical Master System game. So much respect for this
One of the responses to the quoted post says "that sounds like a lot of work for little to no gain" and, yeah. Tremendous respect. Ars gratia artis
They’re doing it in assembly! They really love working hard
Because you gotta get those sweet colors that the NES could never deliver.
I thought swing jazz would need the capability of bass
Wow. Made me wonder if Studio MDHR is European, but turns out they're Canadian. Close enough.
Master System is a nice hidden gem of a console and more ppl should appreciate it
releasing it physically for master system might actually be a crazy great way to capture the brazillian market
Not sure... I mean, not many of us still have a Master System to be honest... (Now if it was a playstation 2 game on the other hand...)
They’d make a Brazilian dollars……
A lot of the new systems (maybe all of them?) have fixed internal libraries sadly I think we’re all skipping over what they should do: game gear port
Did not realize that new Cuphead game is getting a physical Master System release, that is incredibly cool.
i don't even have a master system but i kinda want to get it for that lol
This will be able to run on a Game Gear in squished resolution lmao
Is it? That seemed like a lot of colors for Master System, unless they're gonna scale down
I thought you were just making shit up, but no, there actually is a Cuphead game for Master System being made. 👀
lowkey a lot of people are about to reassess the Master System because of Cuphead and yes. YES.
was it totally smoked by the NES? yes. was it a bad system? buddy it's time to expand your palette.
I still rekon sonic on the master system has some. Of the best most atmospheric background art of 8 bit games. This shit looks so fuckin good.
The library is probably a bit more polarized than even the NES but when you find a good mastersystem game it's like "Wait how has no one ever talked about this game??
the homebrew mk3 scene is pretty awesome imho
The weird thing is more that they are making it for the Master System and not the Genesis/Mega Drive.
It's not that weird considering that there are development communities for all sorts of retro hardware. And besides, maybe they really wanted an 8 bit rather than 16 bit game.
Master System games are fully compatible with the Genesis/Mega Drive.
They said during the trailer that it was an homage to the games they grew up with, so I’m assuming a bunch of the folks at the studio are master system babies
