Marjane Satrapi, author of 'Persepolis,' dies at 56
Marjane Satrapi, the French-Iranian author and filmmaker best known for the autobiographical graphic novel and film Persepolis, died at 56, and her family said she "died of sadness" a little over a year after the death of her husband, Mattias Ripa. Persepolis chronicled Satrapi's childhood during the Iranian Revolution and she adapted it into an acclaimed animated film that broadened global interest in graphic memoir. Her blunt, visual storytelling helped bring Iranian women's stories into mainstream publishing and cinema, influencing a generation of cartoonists and filmmakers.
I saw Marjane Satrapi speak about her work at Smith College 19 years ago, and she said something I have thought about and taught ever since when I teach comics. “I draw what I can’t write and I write what I can’t draw.“
Her Le Monde obituary at least seems to be about her as a person and an artist. How lucky we were that she gave us what she could. www.lemonde.fr/en/obituarie...
This makes me so deeply sad this morning. She was a force. The world needs forces desperately. It feels like there's a little less oxygen in the world without her. Marjane, the legacy you have left us is an eternal gift. With love, a grateful reader.
O, what a truth she speaks! For there are things too deep for words, and things too wide for pictures. How wise to let each tongue tell what the other cannot.
Very few artists have affected me more. 💔
Aww damn. I know a lot of people who learned through her that comics are more than just superheroes.
Very sad to hear of the passing of MARJANE SATRAPI. A lot of the 'graphic novels' produced since the format became popular, really are collections, not 'novels' at all. Persepolis was something special. A novel that lived in my mind long, long after I read it. A very sad loss.
Also sad she was so young. And had awful heartbreak the last year of her life. Very sad.
Oh god, what an incredible loss :( Persepolis did indeed change the trajectory of my own art. It's informed how I draw and how I write for almost the past 20 years. Oof Fuck Hurts
I always found it ironic that the least comic-book portrayal of the Iranian regime in all of media was in her comic. Terrible loss.
Heartbreaking about how she died as well. We talked a lot about, and studied, Persepolis back when I was studying literature science. It left a mark even on those that had never read a comic book before that.
Oh noooo, so sad. Persepolis has stayed with me for years as well. I recommend it all of the time 😞
I'm heartbroken about it. And in her memory- my baby is turning 16 this month, and I think I'm going to buy the Persepolis comics for them. It's the kind of thing they will love, and I want to share my love of this amazing artist with them. May she Rest In Power.
Oh no! Persepolis is brilliant beautiful poignant work.
It’s taught in schools here in Australia. She made such a colossal impact 💔
