John Blanche, seminal Warhammer artist, dies
John Blanche, the longtime Games Workshop art director, died on June 3, 2026 at age 78; he was born October 26, 1948. As art director and illustrator, Blanche created the grimdark, punk-goth visuals that defined Warhammer 40,000, producing iconic imagery of Space Marines, Orks, Tyranids, and Eldar. His mixed-media, distressed style shaped the franchise's identity from its early years and influenced generations of hobbyists and fantasy artists worldwide.
RIP to John Blanche, the best to ever do it. Before Warhammer was even Warhammer he understood what it was: weird, gross, unsettling, maximalist.
oh, man. I consider that THE image of the emperor on the golden throne.
I know the art design has been streamlined and cleaned up but this is still warhammer to me. Absolutely iconic artist. Huge huge loss.
First thing I ever saw from John Blanche was the box art of 3rd Edition. Iconic and amazing, it's so sad.
The setting would not have been nearly as evocative and engrossing in the early years if it weren't for the work of him and Ian Miller
WHERE ARE THE SKELETON DOGS JAMES
That first image appearing on the 3rd edition box was the reason I wanted it as a kid, he was Warhammer as far as I'm concerned
The "thin red line standing in the face of barbarism" battle scenes are so important as a visual depiction of why the Imperium, and the British Empire it calls back to, are the baddies. Idk how many people are familiar but like half of the paintings of Roarke's Drift ever painted are Spess Mehrones
A true legend and icon. He really did define what Warhammer is.
I first came across his stuff as a kid in the Sorcery books by Steve Jackson, and found it so grimy and messy, but at the same time, so evocative. When I got into Warhammer several years later it was great to see his distinctive artwork again and it was absolutely iconic. RIP
Back when it was a horror show, love the Eldar art from that era.
His artwork is so influential. He'll be missed 😢
In his way, as interesting a depictor of quintessentially English Apocalypse as Blake and Hogarth.
Always love the particular musty texture a lot of his work had, the 41st millennium felt old, dirty and diseased. Like a particular level of old and gross you only feel when finding a mothbitten fur coat in an attic sort of grime.
Hugely sad. We've lost John Blanche. It's hard to know where to begin. He set fire to a generation's imagination, and those fires show no sign of stopping burning. His work very much illuminated the darkness.
Hugely talented, and also hugely *funny*. He understood that the key to tying together grotesque creatures and epic battles and huge spaceships was that it was all absurd and that was the best thing about it.
lovely fella IRL, too. a proper loss
I always loved his stuff in the Sorcery! gamebooks. Real medieval art vibes, the polar opposite of the sort of sub-Ren Faire stuff D&D products were doing at the same time.
I met him in (I think) 1990 when I went to GW to talk about a proposed GW comic (which failed to materialise at that time). He seemed like a genuine & decent guy, we connected on our joint love of Mick Austin's art.
I was looking for one to post too, and they're all SO GODDAMN good. I am definitely one of the kids who got into 40k because of him (Along with Mark Gibbons), and I was lucky enough to meet him once as staff. The creator of the very bones of the Imperium. :(
His art is central in making something as absurd as Warhammer 40K believable, loveable and even serious. Literal space knights fighting demons and aliens is in any other form some kind of cartoonish kids fantasy, but John, with a few more artists and writers, was what tied it together so splendidly.
Oh no! Blanche was such a singular artist. I've been inspired by his work since I was a child. His style will always be the essential look of 40k for me.
I truly miss the grotesquery on display in his art. The Imperium is a disgusting place populated by disgusting people. The smell is unbelievable - millenia of rotten incense not quite choling out the stench of shit and blood and oil and ozone. A lot of that has been forgotten.
truly the most KVNT image
RIP British fantasy and sci-fi illustrator, modeller, and art director John Blanche. This fantastic artist was especially well-known for his work on Warhammer (including 40K, etc). He retired from work at Games Workshop three years ago only. He was 77.
"I’m painfully aware that I’ll probably not survive what I want to achieve. I find if I do one thing, it generates four, five or six other things in my imagination and if I do any of those, they also generate the same again." Interview with John Blanche:
(heads up; that first art is sibbick, not blanche)
Of course this happens as I am going through my yearly 40K phase.
I don’t even play those games and this man’s art and designs looms large in my imagination.
John Blanche has died. Absolutely devastating news. I have no words right now. It will have to wait. Farewell, old friend.
I’m so sorry for your loss. Jesus, what an absolute titan. I’m glad En Garde was such a succes, and he got to see it. RIP.
Such sad news... All my love to his family and friends. Truly an inspirational hobby figure for so many of us.
His art both inspired and frightened me as a kid.
Gutting news. He is the reason most of us are here hobbying and creating the art we do. I’m just so grateful he and all of us got to see his work in recent years blossom, whether in TC or En Garde
Such a huge loss to the world. I absolutely treasure the few events I got to meet John at, such a fantastic character. My deepest sympathies to all his family and friends. I'm sure he'll be greatly missed.
Devastating. He created such amazing worlds in such a unique style. An irreplaceable talent.
So sorry for your loss, his art hit my teenage psyche like an 18-wheeler ploughing through someone's garden. The world is a slightly more boring place without him.
Sad news. I always loved his artworks.
So sad to hear, his art and ideas defined so much beyond even games workshop's many games and worlds, it's woven throughout my late childhood and teenage years. It's a devastating loss but what an incredible legacy he leaves
Sorry for your loss, and thoughts with all his friends and family. I always enjoyed looking out for his work.
Terrible news, condolences to his family.
The art of John Blanche and Ian Gibson (Halo Jones) helped me through some really difficult teenage years 😔
My sympathies to you and all of John's friends and family. His art was a huge influence on me and many others growing up with Warhammer and other games. He will be greatly missed.
What a titan! He will be missed dearly. His memory, legacy, art, and worlds he's helped shape will live on in us all!
What a legend. His work was an inspiration to so many of us and he will be missed.
An inspirational titan that will be sorely missed 😭
Such sad news to wake up to. His art was so influential and formative to me as a kid. I remember pouring through old Warhammer books staring at John’s pieces and being completely enthralled by them. The hobby community owes so much to him.
Oh no, terrible news. His art was a huge inspiration to me. May he rest in peace.
My deepest condolences Tuomas. John was an absolute hero of the hobby.
Every Warhammer fan will have their own story of how John Blanche transformed their game & informed their lives. The man was a giant whose shadow has cloaked the entire hobby, not in grim darkness, but in vibrant, idiosyncratic colour. Rest in peace, Mr Blanche.
For me it was his battle fleet gothic art which properly got me into the hobby. A really sad loss for Warhammer and tabletop gaming/art in general
Everyone will rightly speak of John's work for Warhammer, but my first exposure to his talent was actually Fighting Fantasy, with the Sorcery books. The 10 year old me was enraptured by those pictures...
Ah...that sucks. As a kid I was fascinated by his art in the Sorcery series of the Fighting Fantasy Books. So much detail. In some of the illustrations it was almost as if you saw something new every time.
Oh no. What terrible news.
Oh no - that's awful 😞
Too many miss the underlying humour and fun of most of John's work, imho. One of a kind.
Really sad to hear the news about John Blanche. I can't think of many artists who made such influential work in such a lively and energetic way. He will be missed.
I've seen other people say this but I think he was the main artist to GET the setting, and also set it. The kitsch and grotesque and absurdity of everything in warhammer. And his art was lovely to look at too!
My favourite set that GW have put out is the Ecclesiarchy squad, a wonderful adaptation of blanche's illustrations, I've been slowly trying to paint them all up as carefully as possible.
In light of todays news this is now the June mini of the month comp theme: John Blanche. I want you to create a mini that reflects his style and vision as best you can. Can be inspired by existing art or a new interpretation. Rules on skeet 2 (please read them) 1/ #Nerdlings #MiniOfTheMonth
Rules Must be completed June 2026 Must be all own work. Any system or scale. Entries by 7am 1st July to address in my bio Include bluesky handle, four photos, title, and alt text. Good luck!
This is how I found out. Absolute legend and not a style I've ever attempted. I'd like to think he'd find goblins with large weird things on their head amusing.
I need to find those Kickstarter minis.... And also learn how to paint like John Blanche.... Can't be that hard, right?
I usually react by a “count me in” or “bring it” or “it’s on” gif but today …
Yeah, wonderful way to honour his memory and his undeniable influence on Warhammer 40k and other settings via the hobby, sad, sad news indeed.
Really sad to hear this news - he was so talented, and such a huge part of developing the Warhammer vibe. I love the MotM competition but I haven't done it before because I paint so slowly. But I feel like this is one that lends itself to speed, and it'll be nice to honour such a legend. I'm in.
Been meaning to paint a tech priest in that style for a while now.
Ah. Damn. Totally outside my capabilities but I feel like I need to try this one.
I need to do something for this, I just need to find the right mini. Good theme.
Do I have the time to finally commit to a kitbash I meant to do based on his art and paint it up appropriately? Not even a little bit! But we're gonna try.
I think I'll try to defy the summer heat and make an attempt at this. I still have the heroes from Cursed City, a few of them surely look the part.
Kinda feels like it should be something ancient!
I picked up a great model for this at uk games expo last weekend!
I don't have my paints I used for my Zorn palette minis here or I would absolutely do another. Here's a post where I included some of my older minis in that style though bsky.app/profile/airy... It's a very flexible palette. Mars Red, Yellow Ochre, Cad Red, and Titanium White if I remember right...
