UK regulator lets publishers opt out of Google AI search summaries

techJun 3, 202663137

The UK Competition and Markets Authority said publishers can opt out of letting Google use their articles to power AI search overviews and can require clear attribution. The CMA said the change gives publishers effective tools to block their content from powering Google’s generative search features and puts them in a stronger position to negotiate content deals with Google. The rules target AI summaries that stitch news into single-page overviews and give publishers new leverage over licensing and how their work appears in search results.
