Martin Scorsese joins generative AI startup Black Forest Labs
Martin Scorsese joined generative AI startup Black Forest Labs as a partner and advisor. He said he used generative AI during preproduction storyboarding and told reporters, "We have to be open to how it can evolve." Black Forest Labs' tools aim to speed up storyboarding and cut preproduction costs by generating visual layouts and rapid iterations. Scorsese endorsing the technology matters because a director of his stature will accelerate acceptance of AI-assisted preproduction, altering how scenes are visualized and how productions budget and plan.
1/ This company’s models were trained on web scraped datasets (like LAION) and their founders are ex-Stability AI employees who engage in the same thieving practices that led artists like myself to sue Stability. GenAi companies NEED big names to sanitize their exploitation and crippling PR.
2/ To make matters worse, Scorsese throws every single storyboard artist he’s ever worked with under the bus, as he talks about demolishing their livelihoods with models that are likely trained on those story board artist’s same works. To use his legacy and power for this is just so gross.
Oh, great, so superhero movies are beneath his dignity, but he's fine with slop machines.
I think Scorsese’s quote encapsulates the reason why so many businesses leaders have rushed to embrace AI. They’re old men, afraid of being left behind, hoping AI can help them keep up with younger generations and get more done in the short time they have left. It’s more boomer bullshit.
People who don't need the money bags thoroughly screwing everyone that helped build them up.
No wonder they've been on a spree to stuff industry icons' pockets with money so as to validate themselves with the general public. Mr. Scorsese, himself having nothing to lose anymore, is being like "whatever, I'll take the money", nevermind leaving scorched earth in his way out. 🤦♂️
Silver lining I get to use this image against something Scorcese is involved with
Martin Scorsese is now a partner & advisor for a generative AI startup He says he's using AI during preproduction to storyboard projects “I’m interested in the intersection of technology and storytelling ... cinema is a young medium ... we have to be open to how it can evolve" (via NY Times)
so superhero movies are too lowbrow for him but this shit isn't?
Friendship with Scorsese is over
Translation: "We have to be open about how I can make more money for myself."
The artists who draw up his storyboards don’t contribute to the creative process, then? Time for some union solidarity.
the last true director of cinema they said
RIP scorsese. so sad to see him gone.
another class traitor who doesn't respect the craft of the artists who helped make his films great
Unfortunately AI is not innovation. He used to be so highly valued in the cinema world. Now he’s super critical of almost every new movie coming out and on top of that he’s now an AI sympathizer??
“I recently tested this out on a scene, and the ability to visualize and immediately share the storyboard was creatively freeing. During the preproduction process, time costs money, and this allowed us to move faster without sacrificing quality or craft" www.nytimes.com/2026/06/02/b...
I’ve seen people say it’s because of his age and difficulty making movies as a result, I won’t go there. I will say this feels like what someone would be advised to do by an accountant, it’s very “trendy” ugh…
They say “respect your elders”, but when they say stupid shit like this the respect is pretty much gone.
Look how my boy massacred my boy...
He thinks it's the opposite, but his endorsement of AI here just makes Scorsese look old, out of touch, and out of ideas. Very disappointing.
"Most directors are managers, not artists" strikes again I guess
Tell his granddaughter on TikTok to bully him
He said that, as he laid off a bunch of people with a blank look on his face.
“Young medium”? Cinema is over 100 years old! All the major production studios have existed for over 100 years! The only studio younger is 20th Century Fox. And it’s 91!
And this is why I’ve always preferred Spielberg. Can’t believe a man who has long championed the preservation of old films is saying this.
What was all that drama about Marvel for if he was going to dive into the pit of AI slop?
But somehow Marvel is what’s wrong with cinema? Sure thing Marty
Wow sounds fucking shit Martin
"we have to" this "you have to" that. no we don't
He's about to find out the hard way lol. Every single project I have read about that has cheaped out and tried to do AI storyboarding and design has eventually found that AI can not make proper corrections and after wasting money on prompters for months, fired them all and hired real artists.
I’m so over this timeline. Sigh. Cause all those preproduction people are worth dog shit now, right? So sad.
So it seems Martin doesn't care if AI ruins MANY lives, huh? Suffice it to say, I won't be watching any of his films anymore.
i also usually get my tech advice from 83 year ago olds as well
with all due respect to mr scorsese, fuck. that. shit.
Well, that’s one way to decimate a legacy.
Reminder that famous people don't give a shit about what you think, they don't know you, so why give a shit about them. They were never your friends
So is he saying how the storyboards were done before added *nothing* to his ongoing creative process, tweaking it, advancing it, changing it? Did he A) do it all himself and it was slow and bad, or did he B) pay someone with talent who might have added value to it? Cuz if it's B then Yikes, man.
Well that’s really disappointing. I made this by myself without ai if anybody’s interested in supporting human art. www.kickstarter.com/projects/cin...
It's always the fuckin boomers
