Masters of the Universe opens to mixed reviews, Galitzine praised as He‑Man
Travis Knight's Masters of the Universe opened in theaters on June 5, starring Nicholas Galitzine as He-Man alongside Camila Mendes, Jared Leto as Skeletor, Idris Elba, Alison Brie, and Morena Baccarin. Early reviews call the film an uneven but nostalgic reboot, praising Galitzine's charismatic central turn while criticizing a scattershot tone and frequent riffing, and an early critical aggregate sits at 77 percent. The movie pairs gleefully silly visual design and family-friendly action with an ’80s-inflected soundtrack that includes The Cure's "Boys Don't Cry," giving it box-office appeal and positioning it as a potential franchise reboot.
MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE is so sloppily written, it only makes sense as the protagonist’s sad delusion. My review of a film that explicitly says violence isn’t the answer and doesn’t define masculinity, in which violence literally solves everything and proves you’re a real man, is at @thewrap.com
I hate to tell you this, but your review makes it sound like a good time for a very, very stupid franchise. And yeah, I'm old enough to remember it all first time round, and yeah, it deserves what apparently is a rather mocking film about a bunch of - let's be fair - crap. But appreciate the review!
Of course, I'm now envisioning your statement animated into a "What have we learned today" coda at the end of a typical 80s Filmation cartoon.
