Global burned area falls, study

A new study finds total global burned area fell in 2025, even as megafires tore through wealthier regions including California, Canada, South Korea, Scotland and parts of Europe. Devastating blazes in 2025 included the Palisades and Eaton fires in Los Angeles, cited among the most destructive in US history, and a Scottish megafire that burned more than 100,000 hectares. Researchers say changes to farming practices in parts of Africa helped slow fire spread and contributed to the overall decline in burned hectares. The pattern matters because megafires hitting densely populated, asset-rich areas amplify economic losses, strain emergency response and insurance systems, and shift the geography of climate vulnerability.
