The French Navy boarded and diverted the tanker Tagor in the Atlantic after finding it carrying sanctioned Russian crude and petroleum products, President Emmanuel Macron said. The vessel is sanctioned by the European Union, the United Kingdom, and Ukraine and is linked to the so-called shadow fleet that transports Russian oil. A recent report found more than half of sanctioned shadow fleet tankers risk serious environmental harm because many are old, making the Tagor interception a test of enforcement and a reminder of spill and safety dangers.

🛳️ According to FT, at least a third of "shadow" tankers need to be scrapped immediately, and more than half are actually at risk. The "shadow fleet" has about 1,800 ships, of which about 1,500 are oil tankers. Most of them are over 20 years old, the age at which cargo ships are usually scrapped.
