Ali Velshi escorted away while reporting at Delaney Hall protest
MS NOW anchor Ali Velshi was escorted away by Newark police while reporting on a protest outside Delaney Hall ICE facility. Officers formed a heavy police presence and pushed Velshi and other reporters roughly half to three quarters of a mile from the scene, limiting on-the-ground coverage. The move came as police worked to disperse protesters outside the detention center, and it matters because restricting press access reduces independent oversight of law enforcement during immigration enforcement actions.
When you see news reports about the pro-ICE protest outside Delaney Hall today, know that it is about 6 people total surrounded by a million cameras with about 75 to 100 anti-ICE demonstrators across the street.
Pretty good microcosm of the main stream media in the USA.
And they are getting paid. No one is Pro-ICE voluntarily.
Oh so *they* don’t get a “free speech zone” but we do?
Flashback to the tea party.
The side that owns the media knows how to work the media? I'm shocked, SHOCKED!
Is there a non-Bluesky link I can copy/paste? I want to share this on FB. Thanks.
Magats, as well as all fascists in the world, suffer from a marked lack of awareness of the ridiculous.
BREAKING: "Proud Boys go home - free them all, shut down Delaney Hall." Tiny MAGA protest crowd of 30 dwarfed by thousands of protestors who want to abolish ICE in Newark, New Jersey.
See the big smile on the MAGAt's face? That's there because they got what they wanted. They wanted to piss people off. They did. That's their only goal in life. To inflict as much misery on others as they have inside themselves. Truly deplorable people. Best when ignored or mocked.
I was there with a dozen other faith leaders yesterday protesting at Delaney center. We were there because this is a moral issue.
Back in my day we would have beat their asses.
And those 30 wouldn’t be there if they weren’t being paid.
Governor Mikie Sherrill says it was “absolutely necessary” for the NJ State Police to attack protesters at Delaney Hall last night. This was in order for NJ State Police to “secure the area outside of Delaney Hall,” “protect public safety, and avoid escalation from ICE.” www.nj.gov/governor/new...
I'm a 50 year old soccer mom who got a face full of tear gas. That was necessary?
“We need to focus on advocating for better conditions for the detainees, for their families, and ultimately, for the closure of Delaney Hall.” - Yes, that’s what the protesters were doing…
If the point was to avoid escalation from ICE, then it sounds like ICE are the ones who should have been attacked.
"ICE can't escalate if I escalate for them."
Okay, new rule, gang: anyone who says "bring the temperature down" gets primaried on the spot.
This is straight up the language of an abusive partner; the language of patriarchal control. "I had to hit you to protect you."
That last clause … ‘It was necessary for the cops to attack the protesters, or else ICE would have attacked them, and that would have been even worse.’
Oh look, another bootlicking centrist Democrat is capitulating to the people who brutalize their citizens.
ACAB includes former federal prosecutors.
So the logic here is, "we beat you so that ICE didn't beat you harder"? I'm sure the protestors really appreciated this act of solidarity
Governors need to absorb the fact that in this age of video, we have seen what happened and a statement like this won't erase what we saw.
"Protest in the "safe areas", where we say it's allowable." That's not the fucking point.
So they attacked members of the press and destroyed their cameras why?
The Democrats are consistently failing to meet the moment.
Wow what a disappointment @mikiesherrill.bsky.social has become.
So her plan to prevent ICE "escalation" is to escalate for them?
Either she's a fascist or she's bent the knee and is a fascist collaborator.
“All protesters must move to designated ‘safe’ areas where they will be much easier to ignore.”
So her argument was that the state police had to beat the shit out of these people so that ICE couldn’t? Am I getting this right?
I hope she didn't have plans for a long political career
whole lotta DARVO goin on
Vote blue no matter who ain’t going to save us
OMFG. The State Police shd be protecting and serving the people, not ICE. If Fed agents are being that abusive the Governor needs to corral ICE, bring charges and develop a solution that preserves the right of protest. In this case, lives of detainees are at stake. The protests are justified.
Why are we letting republican voting cops aid republican mercenaries and seditionist in crushing non-republican dissent? These cops can’t be trusted and there can be no presumption of goodwill or impartiality. This seems to be well within 2A territory.
Talking out of both sides of her damn mouth.
So they worked with ICE to attack the peaceful protesters with tear gas, pepper balls and horses. Bullshit!
If only there was another way for police to fight ICE.
"We have to destroy the villages in order to save them."
fuck this “bring the temperature down” nonsense. it’s not a both-sides issue
ICE can't escalate to violence if staties escalate to violence first
This is utter bullshit @mikiesherrill.bsky.social . I'm disappointed in you. Fight the fascists, not the protestors.
Utterly shit-scared of their own Police, and with next to no real power over them - exactly like Pritzker and Karen Bass.
"we had to beat you up otherwise they'd've gotten mad and beaten you up"
@mikiesherrill.bsky.social So you support ICE? Or just your donors do? Disgraceful.
The protesters ARE the public!
An impressive feat to be even more disappointing fickle than Walz after the tough talk on the campaign As a former New Jersey resident, I am ashamed
So let me guess, protestors must stay miles away in a parking lot
BULLSHIT. ICE battling protestors means fewer abductions. Helping them at Delaney frees them to kidnap more people.
Her and Spanberger are both useless.
feels like a repeat of this controversial decision by pritzker, though tbf not the exact same situation/escalation
So many unforced errors, so little time.
Its absolutely necessary for the police to arrest these fake feds. Nowhere in this union of states did anyone ever come close to authorizing federal extra judicial terror squads to dominate the local populations. Thats the exact opposite of what was signed up for.
Ah the old “lesser” of two evils trick how original
The only threat to public safety is ICE.
2029 is gonna be a blowout. Hopefully only in the primary. She is awful.
Maybe she meant “I will never stop fighting with you”
It's always fucking peaceful until these dickheads send their ghouls to bust skulls
She could have instructed them not to use excessive force against those exercising their First Amendment right
Move the protest to outside the Governor's home. No sleep for Sherrill until she shuts down ICE and protects the protestors.
The elephant in the room is that Democratic governors do have have control over their state police departments. We saw it in Illinois and California, we saw it in Minnesota and now in New Jersey. Law enforcement will stick together and it's a massive problem going forward.
So he avoided escalation from ICE by escalating with the state police.
evil just evil. Doubling down. DINO.
They had to destroy the village to save the village.
I’m not sure why anyone in NJ would ever support Sherrill ever again. She’s actively working to brutalize her own constituents in the name of lawless white supremacy. Garbage statement, garbage behavior.
"To avoid fascist escalation by the secret police I ordered the regular police to remove protestors from a public space where it was completely legal for them to protest by ordering them to escalate in a fascist manner. -Signed, A fucking idiot."
Sherrill is a former naval officer, former federal prosecutor and a centrist Democrat. A fine example of people who are what they are 🤷♀️
