Arne Slot leaves Liverpool with immediate effect, Andoni Iraola emerges as favourite
Arne Slot has left Liverpool with immediate effect following an end of season review, and the club has identified Andoni Iraola as the clear favourite to replace him. Liverpool finished fifth in the Premier League this season, securing only Champions League qualification despite suffering 12 league defeats and spending a record £415 million on transfers. The managerial change matters because it comes after heavy investment and underperformance, and the new head coach will determine Liverpool's tactics and transfer strategy ahead of next season's Champions League campaign.
🚨 Slot to leave Liverpool! Thanks for number twenty Arne ❤
I think it’s for the best but it’s really sad. I’ll always be grateful to him for no20. And for the incredibly gracious way he dealt with Jota’s passing.
He’s a good man. Wish him well in his next job.
If he starts doing Trivago ad's I'm getting shut of the fucking tv.
Ugh, just when I’d convinced myself that giving him another year would be the right thing to do…
He was exactly the right manager for that team last season. Took all the Klopp DNA, got them to play a little more patiently, and it won them a title. He always deserves credit for that, it just wasn't a good fit going forward.
It was the right thing to do but feel weirdly gutted about it. He was a decent bloke.
I think this is the right thing to do - if next season had started badly he’d have been slaughtered even more. Thanks for the title and how he was amazing during the dark times of Diogo’s passing. I wish him all the best for his future. Onwards and upwards for us now hopefully.
I have mixed feelings. Arsenal are in the CL final today, yet could have conceivably dumped Arteta over the past 4/5 seasons
Perhaps they felt that with all that happened last year, that he just couldn’t lift the players out of their grief. He must’ve felt it too. Maybe - and judging by the changes in personnel in the squad - they need something of a clean slate to start again. A good man. Best of luck to him.
Sad but understandable. Even in Klopp's dips you could see there was a purpose, a trajectory, player buy-in and a roadmap and that we would be better next season.
Regardless of the Head Coach leaving there is potentially a larger issue here. Slot didn’t cope with season two, why we went for such wholesale change (personnel/style) after such a successful campaign is yet to be made clear. If it was Arne, then this is right. If it was Edward’s/Hughes????
Will a new head coach help recruit players, or even retain ones who were on their way out?
“From the moment that we first encountered Arne, it was immediately clear that he is an individual who does not merely accept responsibility, he embraces it." So, here's a big hug...
Klopp klopp klopp or the the 2 Peps
Not very Liverpool to sack a manager. I don’t know how I feel.
Sad to see him go to be honest
Arne Slot won Liverpool the title and for that he should be fondly remembered by supporters. Equally, he simply had to go after last season. Yes, mitigating circumstances, and one particularly tragic one at that, but there is a baseline when you manage a club of this size and he fell way below that.
… more than anything, there is no semblance of a plan and, more fundamentally, no identity. Liverpool have become a shell of a team under his watch. Literally no part of it functioning correctly and that is simply unacceptable. He could’ve and should’ve done more to prevent that total collapse.
I think he was a dead man walking after this season. Rather than give him 6 games max next season, the hierarchy have done the right thing & pulled the plug now. He’d lost the fans & perhaps the players too? He’s an honourable bloke & he gave us our 20th title of which we should all be grateful.
We’d got to a point where he wasn’t going to be able to turn it around. Better for the club, better for him.
Hopefully he's remembered for winning the league. He'll always be a legend for that.
Arne Slot leaves Liverpool with the second-highest win rate of any manager in the club's history (100+ games). Jürgen Klopp - 60.9% Arne Slot - 58.4% Kenny Dalglish - 58.3% Bob Paisley - 57.4% Rafael Benítez - 55.4% Joe Fagan - 53.4% Bill Shankly - 52.0% #LFC
The title winning season is doing an awful amount of hard work there. We have not looked capable this season. Yes, there are mitigating circs., but at times, he's looked totally at sea.
I suspect that Dalglish's record looks very different if you separate the two eras, though.
