Von der Leyen condemns Russian drone strike in Romania
A Russian drone crashed into a residential building in Galați, Romania, near the Ukrainian border, injuring two civilians. EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen condemned the strike, saying it 'crossed another line', and António Costa and Kaja Kallas also denounced Russia for violating Romanian airspace. Romania expelled a Russian consul and NATO condemned the attack, steps that raise pressure on Moscow and could prompt tougher EU and NATO responses.
The Russian drone crash into apartments in Galați was a blatant and serious violation of Romania’s sovereignty and European airspace. I spoke with Foreign Minister Oana Țoiu this morning to convey the EU’s full solidarity with Romania. Russia has long ago stopped respecting borders. (1/2)
Moscow cannot be allowed to breach European airspace with impunity. EU Foreign Ministers yesterday vowed to ramp up pressure on Russia, increase support for Ukraine, and invest in Europe’s own defence readiness. (2/2)
If NATO doesn’t respond, it’s effectively dead. The entire purpose of the treaty was mutual protection from Soviet aggression.
Far Past time we we closed all airspace across Europe & Ukraine !! Time to shoot down everything that crosses the border from russia
The only correct response here is military action, all else is just a green light for more escalation
Give russia the response they deserve. At least Article 4.
Time to close the sky and actively shoot down Russiam drones & planes over Europe/Ukraine without warning. Time to cancel all visas for Russians to Europe without any exemption. No use of European waters, skies or land anymore for any Russian military/civilian vehicle.
Romania is a NATO member. Shouldn’t we call upon fellow NATO members, including the United States of Trump, to deal with Russia?
Russia has NEVER respected borders.
Russia continues to expand the Overton window. Someone needs to give it a good shove through it.
You should at least make a no fly zone 30 kilometers from the EU border into Ukraine. Why are you waiting for (more) people to die before actively doing something. Your strong "condemnations" mean nothing to russia and they just make us look weaker.
Russia has lost its compass and so has Trump's America.
Somehow, this response fills me with more confidence: bsky.app/profile/fint...
There has been a lot of talk already in Europe. Time for more actions. Europe could very well close Western Ukraine sky to protect it's own and to help Ukraine without threatening russia
At least I hope effective sanctions (ex punishing or closing companies that allow russia to build drones) will be taken.
Make the (double) passports of all oligarchs invalid. Send them and all rich children back to Russia. And take care to crush Russia completely. They will never change. It is a sick country with mostly sick people under an extremely repressive authoritarian fascist regime bsky.app/profile/anne...
If your gonna do more sanctions, how about that Irish alumina factory that belongs to Deripaska and sends ore to russia. And maybe have Romania start helping shoot down drones?
Every time a ruSSian drone crasch in to EU . Just give Ukraine € 200K Make it become worthless for ruSSia to do it.
Why refer to it as a “crash” and not as an “attack?”
Let's do some kinetic response. Warn the Russian military occupation force in parts of the the state of Moldova (transnistria) that one of their facilities will be flattened, so they can evacuate. And then flatten it. Thats the language dictators understand. Soft ball is for friendly adversaries.
So the EU is going to impose more sanctions, while still buying russian oil. That will sure teach Putin a lesson.
Kaja Kallas the toothless tiger who keeps condemning until we all go to Elysium...
It was a blatant attempt by Putin to test NATO resolve.
time to fight back #fuckrussia
About time EU did something instead of talking about it
If there’s no real reaction to Russian drone crashing in Romania, there will likely be more. All the expelling and the big words on socials is one thing, but unless NATO is ready to show force, Russia would see NATO as weak. Russia already does. Hence, the drone in Romania.
What are you going to do? Attack Russia over this? Nope. Put NATO air defense assets in Ukraine to protect NATO countries. Then shoot down what you can!
Romania needs to call this. NATO is a defensive alliance not an offensive one.
It’s been like this for a long time : 2006 Litvinenko poisoning 2008 invasion of Georgia. 2014 first invasion of Ukraine. 2018 Skripal poisoning 2022 second invasion of Ukraine. We keep not responding and - guess what - the attacks keep getting bolder and more reckless.
Both the US and Russia have been shown to be pretty weak by other nations of late. The Russian economy is tottering, and the Ukraine counter-offensive looks very strong. Judging between the relative weaknesses of everyone's positions China keeping its powder dry is probably the path of wisdom.
The unspoken threat is that Trump stabs NATO in the back on behalf of Israel
The reaction is Europe supplying Ukraine with even more resources to take down Russia’s oil industry!!!! More resources to defend itself on the front line. More intelligence. More support.
NATO is a defensive alliance. Already helping Ukraine. Nore help is needed.
NATO show your strength, don't wait for Trump!
Come on, NATO. Does your treaty mean nothing? Will you let trump win???
All this is Trump's fault. If he would of had shown some balls from the beginning instead of treating Putin like his role model and his buddy the war would of been over by now. Trump is a traitor to our national ideals.
The consequences are huge is the biggest problem, not that NATO is weak, just how do they respond in a manner that doesn’t create WW3? Many would argue that NATO should retaliate by invading Russia but are we all prepared for how the rats will respond? They only have one tool left.
Romania is the soft underbelly of Europe
Russian drone struck residential building in Romania. NATO expressed “concern” since they were targeting Ukrainian infrastructure and “accidentally” crossed the border. You can talk yourself into inaction as much as you want, but Russia is targeting YOUR DEFENSE SYSTEM & testing your Article 5.
A conflict is not a tango that takes two. It actually takes one to hit you in a face and a square moment where you decide whether you knock them out or become their subordinate.
And on the human level, to hear that “this is ok since they actually wanted to kill Ukrainians” as a Ukrainian… hurts.
Your security was already compromised, they struck your residential building.
Time for NATO to accidentally bomb Moscow
NATO’s complicity to putins incremental dissolution of NATO
It's very difficult to accidentally hit the wrong thing with a drone, especially the wrong country. You could have a rogue drone pilot, but I doubt that's the case.
Does Romania have a policy to shoot down foreign drones and missiles that enter its airspace yet?
NATO. Never attack terrorist organizations
Amazing how we deem things as war crimes in international laws but do nothing to enforce these laws.
A Russian drone has hit a Romanian apartment block. EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said "Russia's war of aggression has crossed yet another line" and that the EU is preparing a "21st package of sanctions".
Ukrainian drones hit Volgograd and Yaroslavl refineries last night. They’re both among the largest refineries in Russia. #explodey
Crickets on Israel doing the same thing daily.
Romania is in NATO, so they should invoke article 5, right?
Putin is testing the fences.
If NATO is too scared to invoke anything as usual, they should at least consider a revenge move anyway and call it an oopsie mistake as well. Turkey's fighter jet style. “Assuming that you can’t defend yourself increases the chance that you will be attacked.” It's not rocket science.
I think it is time for a buffer/no-fly zone, at least across a part of Ukraine, see this proposal here ->
And that sanctions package will have no aluminium export bans (the "neutral" fucks in ireland can keep helping russians make bombs with smiles on their faces) and no visa bans. Christ on a bike, EU is pathetic.
The twenty-first package of toothless sanctions. Kinetic sanctions work!
I hope they make this package of sanctions really hurt, enough to bring Russia to its knees.
The people complaining that the EU is doing nothing about it should remember that the EU and other partners, excluding the US, are the ones keeping Ukraine in the fight. Especially financially. You don't want to go to war with Russia over an incident like this.
🇺🇦🇷🇴 Sybiha: The recent explosion of Russian drone in the residential area of Galaț proved once again that Russian aggression poses a real threat to the Black Sea region and the entire Europe. Strengthening support to Ukraine and increasing pressure on the aggressor remain critical to restore peace…
🇺🇦🇷🇴 Sybiha: Bolstering Ukraine’s air defense is also a strategic task — to protect not only our country, but also reduce risks for our neighbours. Ukraine stands firmly by Romania. We are ready to work closely together to strengthen protection from such threats.
Any such actions by Russia should be Imediatly followed by tightening sanctions or a disproportionate increase in military aid to Ukraine.
🚨 BREAKING: Russia attacked NATO member Romania with a drone. The drone strike on an apartment building caused a massive explosion in Galati.
NATO: "We condemn Russia’s recklessness." As its first response, NATO is pretending that a blatant act of war is just Russia being careless.
This is NOT by "accident" - this is an incr. desperate 🇷🇺 trying to intimidate & scare Romania from helping & facilitating help & support to 🇺🇦. There is no sustainable option but a russian defeat & the end of Putin's criminal regime. The EU / Eur Nato must act accordingly!
In the end, Romania's response was quite good. We shut down the Russian consulate in Constanta and declared the consul non grata & had a quick discussion with Ukraine to increase cooperation for anti-drone defense. It is actually a solid movement.
...and NATO- jellyfishes keep on swimming 😡
🇪🇺🇷🇴 Ursula von der Leyen: Russia’s war of aggression has crossed yet another line. A Russian drone incursion struck a densely populated area in Romania, injuring civilians. On EU territory.
We stand in full solidarity with Romania and its people. As we continue strengthening our security and deterrence, especially on our Eastern border, we will keep increasing the pressure on Russia. We are preparing a 21st package of sanctions.
„Another line crossed“ and the consequences are…checks notes….ah, yes. Sternly words. Because they worked so well the past 100 times. How about some real reaction? Like „if it looks to us that something of yours might enter NATO airspace we‘ll shoot that fucker down, whether you like it or not“
🇷🇴 Russian drone hits high-rise building in Romania. How did the world react? ▪️ NATO: "We condemn Russia's recklessness. We will continue to strengthen defenses against all threats, including drones." ▪️ Von der Leyen: Russia "crossed another red line." 21st package of sanctions is being prepared.
▪️ US Ambassador to NATO Whitaker: "We stand in solidarity with our NATO partner Romania. We will defend every inch of NATO territory" ▪️ Romanian President Dan: "Full responsibility lies with Russia. Romania will not accept that Russian aggression threatens the security of Romanian citizens."
Saying that Russia crossed another red line without acting on it is exactly what provokes Russia to continue. This would be an excellent time for European Nato countries close to Russia/Ukraine to implement a No fly zone over Ukraine with regard to their own security.
Red line… 21st sanction package… yeah that will teach them! Because those 20 packages where ofcourse orange and green lines
Well their reactions shows that Russia is in control. They strike in a NATO county and they get nothing but a talking to . Unfortunately Russia is showing the world they have the upper hand They do what ever they want Europe and NATO hide behind diplomacy.
NATO should make it very clear to putin that from now on, any time that a russian drone enters NATO space and does damage, NATO will retaliate in kind. No exceptions. If NATO / EU keep wishy-washying around, putin will just get ever more emboldened.
For security reason, NATO must close the sky in west part of Ukraine !
Red red lines! How many red red lines???!!!
NATO needs to state that any drone that comes within a certain distance of any NATO border with Ukraine will be engaged and destroyed!! No more bluffing and imaginary red lines, it's time to be a proper defensive organisation and not just an exorbitantly expensive logo!!!
🔴 Romania considers invoking NATO Article 4 following Russian drone strike. Foreign Minister Țoiu indicated that consultations among allies may be formally requested after a Russian drone struck an apartment building in the city of Galați earlier today, threatening national security.
Romania is actually sitting there wondering whether it should even hold consultations? Russia must be really scared right now.
For security reasons, NATO should close the sky in west of Ukraine. Period.
Considers?? So it will not happen. Rutte will give a stern warning to putin and Ukraine will go on to fight alone. NATO is as useless as the UN.
They're considering whether to have a meeting to write a strongly worded letter.
