Valve restocks Steam Deck but keeps steep price increases
Valve restocked the Steam Deck after months of sell-outs but raised prices across the lineup. Recent hikes push the OLED and 1TB models near $949, putting the premium configurations at their highest retail levels. The four-year-old handheld now carries modern premium pricing that narrows its value gap with home consoles. That matters because the Deck’s portability and access to PC game libraries drive its appeal, and higher costs risk putting the hardware out of reach for casual buyers.
Nintendo announced a $50 Switch 2 price increase 5 months in advance and everyone called them evil and greedy and told people to pirate their games People found out about the *minimum* $240 price increase for the Steam Deck by checking its store page. There was no announcement. Almost no criticism
for whatever reason, people have virtually entirely given valve a pass on all levels of criticism. in a lot of ways valve fans remind me of circle 2016 elon fans tbh
There's plenty of criticism. Not sure where you're getting that from. Multiple articles, including one I wrote, as well as multiple videos.
im not saying Nintendo is a good company. but the fact they gave everyone months of advance before the price hike shows they are trying.
Price increase is due to ai driving up hardware prices. I wouldn't bat an eye for hardware price increases but pushing games to $80 is far more agregious. No game is worth $80. I wouldn't even buy gta6 for 80
there's loads of criticism if you even bother to look, but don't do that because it'll upset your nonsense narrative (btw, the Switch 2 was already overpriced when it launched, but I guess you conveniently forgot that)
Genuinely wonder if part of it is because Steam is also on pc as is, so there less of a point to say just pirate the games. You don’t need to because you don’t NEED the system. But what I do wanna know is how the hell it’s all sold out at that price.
There’s ton of criticism. And it was a dog act by Valve to now announce it for those waiting for stock. Still not going to buy a Switch 2. Friends are looking at the Legion Go S or waiting for Xmas sales.
Well the switch 2 is THE mainstream console and the deck is pretty niche so obviously 1 of the 2 will get more online traction, no?
Because the nintendo estore is awful with too much AI slop?
No there is criticism, just like when the ps5 and xbox series prices rose. They're all greedy corporations who are not your friends.
Uh yeah it's a phenomenon called "Steam has enough goodwill to be able to do something like that because of a history of good consumer-friendly business practices and Nintendo is known for suing their gamers so they can't get away with it." actually
This breached containment so I'm muting this
Because its trendy to hate nintendo for everything
there has been plenty of criticism, what do you mean..? also valve doesn't have game licencing fees and online subscriptions to fall back either, it still sucks though
Nintendo has always been the affordable console option compared to Sony and MS too.
I’d attribute that to the walled garden nature of Nintendo. You need to buy into the system if you want to play their games. The deck is nice but ultimately unneeded hardware. You can skip it all together if you have any moderately good computer around already which quite a few people do.
Nintendo, as the "least evil" gaming company, is held to different standards than other companies.
Gonna be that A-hole that says there’s a crap-tonne more reasons to boycott Nintendo and their business practices. I don’t own a steam deck, and I never will. I stopped respecting Nintendo when they made it clear how disrespectfully greedy they are. Period. In my opinion
Oh fuck valve just killed the steam deck with that price increase...
At that point you might as well buy one of the more powerful competitors and just install steam OS on it
Oh god I just peaked in We GOTTA kill the AI industry faster...
Once again don't think it's really valves fault...people keep wording it like that and it gives the impression that they decided on this. Not you know, a known issue thanks to AI and Bitcoin morons jacking up the prices of hardware.
