Rob Pilatus died April 2, 1998 in a Frankfurt hotel from a drug and alcohol overdose, renewing questions about WHO performs as Milli Vanilli today. Milli Vanilli began as the duo Rob Pilatus and Fab Morvan, but in 1990 producer Frank Farian revealed that session singers recorded the hits while Pilatus and Morvan lip-synced, costing them a revoked Grammy and ending the original group's run. Pilatus's death reframed the episode as a personal tragedy and highlighted how producers exploited frontmen in pop music. Fab Morvan has continued performing and releasing solo material, and he sometimes performs Milli Vanilli songs, but the original duo no longer exists.
