Green Party selects Sarah Wakefield as Makerfield candidate
Sarah Wakefield, a Manchester city councillor and charity director, will be the Green Party candidate in the Makerfield by-election on June 18. She replaces the party's initial candidate after that person withdrew and the Green Party announced Wakefield's selection. Wakefield's candidacy puts the Greens on the ballot and could attract environmentally minded voters, potentially affecting vote dynamics in the local contest.
Meet Sarah Wakefield. Manchester City councillor, mum of two, sustainable food campaigner - and your Green MP candidate for Makerfield.
Andy Burnham is just more of the same. Anyone still voting Labour is being fooled, just like in 2024. He's already walked back his previous positions, he's the Labour Together choice. Vote Green 💚
“Wakefield for Makerfield” The placards write themselves. 🤝
It's absolutely the right choice to stand a candidate here. Green supporters need someone to vote for. Labour bleat about a Green vote letting Reform in, but it's desperation because they can't offer anything positive. Ignore it. If Andy Burnham is going to win he needs to win on his own merit.
Fantastic, best of luck Sarah! 💚
"I would vote Greens but the majority won't so I won't" is literally the same as saying "I would do the right thing but the majority are not doing the right thing so I won't." Hold yourself to account, have some moral integrity and do the right thing, even if you're the only person doing it.
We can hold Burnham to account from the left! Good luck Sarah 💚
Good luck Sarah. And credit to you for taking on this particularly challenging candidacy. 🤞
💚💚💚 Brava! Happy to see you Sarah Wakefield represent those values that the majority of this country holds dear. Sending peace+joy for your campaign.
Best wishes and good luck from all of us. 💚

Wishing you all the best Sarah.
Good luck!💚 They said we couldn't win in Gorton and Denton... We showed them how wrong they were. Let's show them again in Makerfield!
I’m sure she’s a lovely person but standing a green candidate at this by election is completely the wrong move and could easily be to the detriment of the country.
Good luck!! So glad we're actually standing a candidate ✅
Very happy you’ve not stepped aside. If Andy can’t win this by election he’s clearly not the saviour Labour think he is. Although given how quickly he’s already drifted to the right, I think it’s clear he’s just gonna be more of the same. Maybe with better PR, though even that’s doubtful.
Great news! Good luck Sarah 💚
I see a significant number of accounts here trying to decide which parties people should be allowed to vote for.
Absolutely the correct decision to field a candidate! Good luck Sarah bsky.app/profile/chri...
I doubt she'll win but I'm glad you're standing someone. Labour need to be reminder that the choice in 2029 is a broad left coalition or a Reform government.
Don’t screw this one up
Perhaps we could know a little bit more about her? Is she another Chowns? If not, no thank you
"Welcome to our second choice candidate as we didn't properly check our first one was really up for it !". I wish her luck, but maybe her odds would be better if you'd chosen her first.
#VoteGreen #SarahWakefield #18June2026 #RealHope #RealChange #Makerfield Make a difference.
Good luck and make it a great platform for Green polices Sarah
"Mum of two" Going down the Andrea Leadsom route, I see. Being a parent does not mean you're a better politician, or person. Do better.
Correct decision! Well done, Sarah and God speed your campaign. IMHO it’s all to play for!
This is one to step aside from
The Green Party should campaign for Makerfield exactly like they campaigned for Gorton and Denton. If Andy Burnham so desperately needs their votes he can come and offer the Green Party voters something to make them change their mind.
It would sure help if Burnham hadn't decided ... No PR No SIngle Market No Freedom of Movement No change to Reeves' fiscal rules No change to Mahmood's hostile environment ... Because so far it's hard to see any difference between him and Starmer.
I struggle to understand what people see in Burnham. If anyone knows please tell me because I haven't got a bloody clue!
You don't believe in tactical voting in any constituency then?
Labour has shot itself in the foot with a leadership contest and burnham is frankly an overrated Brexiter. Thus the psychodrama resumes
This isn’t like Gorton or Denton. Those are urban, softer Labour seats where Greens can shape pressure politics. Makerfield is older, post-industrial and far more entrenched. Treating it the same is lazy copy-paste thinking. Also voters aren’t bargaining chips to be traded for “offers” anyway🤷🏻♂️
