Towel Day and Glorious 25th of May tributes to Douglas Adams and Terry Pratchett
On May 25 readers observed Towel Day and the Glorious 25th of May to honor Douglas Adams and Terry Pratchett, carrying towels, quoting "Don't Panic," and invoking "42." The Lo‑Fi Orchestra released a Journey of the Sorcerer tribute tying the Eagles' piece to The Hitchhiker's Guide, and artists showcased Discworld's World Turtle in new 'World on a Turtle's Back' exhibits. Critics and writers urged renewed readership of Terry Pratchett, warning his comic genius risks being forgotten and stressing both authors' continued influence on science fiction and satire.
Status report, "May the 24th Warmup": Absolutely super weather today. Think I'll go put up the umbrella over the paddock table, pour a glass of something cold, settle down outside for a bit, and reread NIGHT WATCH. (While pausing to enjoy a hardboiled egg or so...) #GNUTerryPratchett
Drinking to an old friend. 😄
My copy of Night Watch was signed by Sir Pratchett at a signing in Petaluma. After he died I had his signature transferred from the book to a chest tattoo along with a badge design, lilac flowers and 'how do they rise up'. I have yet to find someone IRL who understands the significance.
It's the glorious 25th, I'm waking up in Paris but my lilac badge is at home and so are all my towels. Mind you maybe they do have lilac towels here but even so I don't have an inch of room in my carry on bag But a lilac towel has always been at the back of my mind as a thing to have on this day.
How do they rise up, rise up high ?
I was deeply saddened to have moved to a latitude where the lilacs bloom before the Glorious 25th.
How do they rise up?
I did something similar yesterday, and it was wonderful. Those are beautiful lilacs! bsky.app/profile/jenw...
Cold, rainy, and miserable here. I'm having freshly baked scones and a cuppa.
We're a little further east, just beyond the Severn, and it went past "pleasant outside in the shade" to "siesta time indoors" in the last hour or so, but lunch out on the patio was a pleasure.
Thinking about folk with such limited media literacy that they read "we've got other pronouns here", encounter Cheery, meet the High King of the dwarves, read a whole book about tipping over the gender binary and go "that writer would side with the t3rfs" 😒 #gnuterrypratchett #howtheyriseup
Ffs, he wrote Cheery in 1995/6 and had "good man" Carrot called out for being an asshat to her and his girlfriend telling him to respect Cheery's gender presentation and pronouns
Terry would be utterly horrified by what *she* is doing (and also by what *he* has done). Anyone who thinks he'd support this shit is as dumb as they are evil
