Where the Red Fern Grows named by readers as an early book that 'destroyed' them
Where the Red Fern Grows is being named by readers as the early book that "destroyed" them because of the deaths of Old Dan and Little Ann. Readers also single out Charlotte in Charlotte's Web, Leslie in Bridge to Terabithia, Hazel in Watership Down, and Beth in Little Women as other childhood heartbreaks. Many say they first read these books between ages seven and ten, making those deaths their first literary encounter with grief. That matters because Where the Red Fern Grows and similar children's novels demonstrate how early encounters with loss shape empathy and lifelong emotional memories.
I don’t know if it was the very first but the one that comes to mind immediately is the dogs in Where The Red Fern Grows that book fucked me up real bad as a kid
I know everybody talks about the dogs, but the kid axing himself was brutal for a book assigned in third grade.
why was Bridge to Terabithia on so many school reading lists
When I was in fifth grade that book was in the library and one kid told everyone else about it, so for three months a new kid would burst into tears during reading time every week. Eventually enough kids had read it that we’d kind of quietly let them have space to cry because, yeah, we got it.
i finished reading it at night when it was raining and happened in to turn to look out the window right then and it was like a mirror so i *think* it was the first time i *saw* myself ugly crying and it immediately turned to laugher, cauterizing the wound before it could warp me because wtf book?
Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes. Just... damn.
I remember reading it in elementary school but I can’t remember if it messed me up or if it was the movie that did it, because we watched it after reading it.
Bridge to Terabithia got me as a kid. It was just so sudden and damn near mundane as to what happened. Just an accident and boom, Leslie is gone.
Maybe Feed by M.T. Anderson. A girl dies a horrible death because she was deemed an unprofitable consumer and they refused to give her healthcare.
That was a rough book to read at age 10.
Piggy in Lord of the Flies. I probably read it too young.
Both of these & Charlotte.
Cregga Rose-Eyes from the Redwall series.
This actually probably was my first because I ended up reading it a grade or two early. Thanks, accelerated reading program.
Where The Red Fern Grows destroyed 11yo me
Where The Red Fern Grows. First with the kid who died from the axe, second was Old Dan and Little Ann. 💔💔💔
They made us read that in third, fourth, AND fifth grade and we had to watch the movie every time, too. I have ZERO idea what psychopath made that a thing but it was torture.
And the description of their injuries was so brutal! 😭
The release scene in the Giver for me
