8 Democrats help pass GOP bill forcing teachers to out transgender students
The House approved a GOP-backed bill that requires teachers to obtain parental consent before changing a student's pronouns or preferred name on any school forms, and eight Democrats, Henry Cuellar (Texas), Donald Davis (North Carolina), Cleo Fields (Louisiana), Laura Gillen (New York), Vicente Gonzalez (Texas), Marcy Kaptur (Ohio), Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (Washington), and Eugene Vindman (Virginia), voted with Republicans to pass it. The measure also bars teachers from discussing transgender people or issues in the classroom, restricts related materials such as books, and would prohibit LGBTQ+ school clubs. Supporters describe the bill as protecting parental rights, while advocates say it will force transgender students to be outed to parents and undermine student privacy, safety, and school inclusion.
Shame on every supporter of this harmful bill, but especially the eight Democrats who voted with Republicans to forcibly out trans kids.
With rising hate crimes and violence in the wake of the GOP’s increasingly extreme opposition to trans people’s very existence, Democrats should be fighting to protect trans communities — not joining Republicans’ attacks.
And every decent teacher will ignore this BS.
That Vindman would vote for this is a huge disappointment. I mean- it really pisses me off that any democrats would vote for this. But Vindman is particularly disappointing. Cuellar should have been put on trial for his money laundering & bribery charges.
So disappointing. Why does the federal government think they should regulate this, but not, for example, assault weapons, which are far more harmful to school kids than any discussion of trans sexuality?
Republicans will primary one of their own over the smallest things, we should do the same to these wannabe Dixiecrats
Gluesenkamp Perez is just the fucking worst. I feel bad for the folks that put her in office. She votes for a lot of shit that you know her constituents do not support. Constantly.
Democratic Reps. Henry Cuellar (Texas), Donald Davis (N.C.), Cleo Fields (La.), Laura Gillen (N.Y.), Vicente Gonzalez (Texas), Marcy Kaptur (Ohio), Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (Wash.) and Eugene Vindman (Va.) all voted for this bill.
Democrats just keep getting more and more right-wing.
And here they are Henry Cuellar (TX) Don Davis (NC) Cleo Fields (LA) Laura Gillen (NY) Vicente González (TX) Marcy Kaptur (OH) Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (WA) Eugene Vindman (VA)
Such bs. Shame on any Dems who voted to throw kids and teachers under the bus.
The House passed a bill late Wednesday to force public school teachers to out transgender students to their parents. It wasn’t a party-line vote, either: Eight Democrats voted for it. www.huffpost.com/entry/8-demo...
This bill requires teachers and school administrators to get parental consent for changing a student's pronouns or preferred names on any school forms. It also bans teachers from talking about trans people or issues at all. Eight Dems backed this!
Harmful to kids who have parents that don’t understand. Not good.
This is exactly the kind of grossness I'm talking about when I say both parties are the problem. I hope a strong Progressive candidate primaries every one of them.
Vindman just lost me like Fetterman did.
I really don't get Vindman
Perez needs to GTFO. She has been nothing but a huge dissappointment.
WTF is wrong with Vindman?
Why don't they let the parents parent? It's nobody's business but the child and the parent!
"...also bars teachers from talking about transgender people or issues in the classroom [including books]... would also ban LGBTQ+ school groups." and here i kept thinking washington was a safe[r] place. so angry about marie. also, vindman? what the actual fuck?!
perez represents the district in the state that has the dubious honor of being mostly very far right, with their largest city being a place for people who work in portland that also want to dodge property taxes by living in vancouver, wa. outside of the puget sound region, it is bad here
@democrats.org "make the tent bigger" was actually "kick people MAGA doesn't like out"
