Germany's Merz proposes 'associate' EU membership for Ukraine
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz proposed creating an "associate member" status that would let Ukraine join European Union institutions without voting rights. He set out the plan in a letter to EU leaders as an interim step toward full accession, giving Kyiv a direct role in EU structures while withholding voting power. Merz presented the status as a way to accelerate political and security integration now while Ukraine completes rule-of-law and other reforms, a change that could alter the EU enlargement process by offering immediate inclusion without full membership.
❗️Reuters says German Chancellor Merz proposed giving Ukraine EU associate member status without voting rights. Ukrainian officials could join EU summits and ministerial meetings, while member states would politically commit to applying the bloc’s mutual aid clause. #Ukraine
Mutual aid clause is a good start, but voting rights are crucial for Ukraine's future. What's the EU's endgame here? 🤔
Politically speaking, the aim is to admit countries quickly now, as their accession process could otherwise take years. This would present Putin with a fait accompli and limit his potential influence.
Friedrich Merz has proposed to grant "associate EU membership" to Ukraine. It would include: - Participation in EU institutions without voting rights - Step-by-step access to EU-funded programmes - Mutual assistance under Article 42.7 - Snap-back mechanism in case of backsliding Full story.
Merz in his letter: "I am well aware of the fact that this proposal will raise a couple of questions on its political, technical and legal feasibility. But I am convinced that all these questions can be solved if we take a constructive approach towards this special status."
EU + Merz are truly interested in Ukraine becoming a full EU member, but EU needs some reforms beforehand. So Merz´ suggestion would be a very practical solution, giving Ukraine quick access + sending a strong signal to Putin. It also has to be clear this is not a substitute for full membership.
Good. That's really going to piss Putin off.
Ukraine can take everything practical — access to EU institutions, programmes, funding and security guarantees — but keep saying clearly: this is not a replacement for full membership. Otherwise, the EU could get stuck in a “we gave you almost-membership, what else do you want?” format.

How fucking ungrateful! The EU is lucky enough to have Ukraine & should be begging to join them, if Ukraine allows!
Meanwhile, Hungary has begun talks with Ukraine over the rights of the Hungarian minority in Zakarpattia, a key condition for Budapest to support the next step in Ukraine’s EU accession process. Péter Magyar says Hungary is “asking for nothing more than what every minority in Europe deserves.”

It is assumed that such a status will allow representatives of Kyiv to participate in EU summits and meetings of the European Commission and the European Parliament. The initiative is outlined in a letter to Ursula von der Leyen and António Costa. 2/2
I think that sounds like a good European middle ground.
