Canada nominated Gen. Jennie Carignan, Chief of the Defence Staff, to run for Chair of the NATO Military Committee in the fall election. Defence Minister David McGuinty announced the candidacy and said Carignan will remain in her current role until next year. The chair leads NATO's senior military body that provides strategic military advice to alliance political leaders and coordinates military policy among member states. If elected, Carignan would shape alliance-level military guidance during a period of renewed focus on European and transatlantic deterrence.
