One of the many great things about the news Taiwan Travelogue has won the Booker is that this is an opportunity to move beyond the international media's narrow, restrictive narratives about Taiwan. If readers can come to appreciate the complexity of Taiwan's history, this can only be a good thing.

Taiwanese author Yáng Shuāng-zǐ has won the International Booker Prize 2026 for Taiwan Travelogue, translated by @linkinglionking.bsky.social, with the novel being the first book translated from Mandarin Chinese to win the award. 👇

btw a Thai Facebook page called Taiwan Travelogue a "YURI" and I'm dying because the book is literally about Japanese colonial rule in Taiwan, how Japanese was forced on people as the "national language" and now we're slapping a "yuri" label on this Taiwanese work? The meta irony is off the charts.
