Report warns 2026 FIFA World Cup could be a climate catastrophe

The Guardian analysis projects roughly 9 million tons of CO2-equivalent emissions from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, driven by the expanded 48-team format and travel between 16 host cities across the United States, Canada and Mexico. It says the biggest sources will be air travel and hotel stays, and points to the 2022 Qatar tournament as a precedent where promised carbon reductions largely failed while extreme summer heat creates added safety and infrastructure risks. Nine million tons equals the annual emissions of nearly 2 million passenger cars, a scale that undercuts FIFA's sustainability claims and shows hosting mega-sporting events can seriously complicate host cities' climate goals unless travel and venue emissions are tightly addressed.
