International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT)

cultureMay 17, 20262606,426

On May 17, 2026, governments, NGOs and community groups observed the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia under the theme "At the Heart of Democracy." European leaders including António Costa emphasized that "Every human being is unique in their identity" while activists used the day to demand concrete measures such as increased funding for LGBTQ+ organizations and stronger workplace protections. First observed May 17, 2005, IDAHOBIT matters because it reframes LGBTQ+ rights as central to democratic values and urges lawmakers to adopt legal protections and fund support services.

Mark Carney

Pride is a promise — that every Canadian can live safely, openly, and proudly as themselves. On the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia, we recommit ourselves to fight for the dignity, security, and equal rights of 2SLGBTQIA+ people in Canada and around the world.

Not in Alberta where Danielle Smith has used the notwithstanding clause to strip away trans rights and has banned the pride flag and books mentioning anything LGBTQ+ related in schools.

dwmorck35

You need to help 🌈 people in Alberta

hope50.bsky.social24

But the Conservative Premiers (Marlaina Kolodnicki Smith) are still allowed to make your life hell & control your transitioning childs body. So not so free 😡 So no parental rights! So no science backed but doctors! But at least you can still participate in pride. For now #abpoli

Aidan22

And yet Daniel Smith is banning pride flags in classrooms, silent visual supports like pride flags matter 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

DLee🇨🇦🙋21

🇨🇦 Every Canadian deserves dignity, safety, and the freedom to live openly and proudly. Thank you PM Carney for standing for equality, respect, and inclusion.

Pastel Ponylady18

"By some estimates, 2SLGBTQIA+ youth make up between 25% and 40% of homeless youth in Canada. That means that nearly 1 out of every 3 homeless young people in Canada identifies as 2SLGBTQIA+." safe, affordable housing would go a long way to providing dignity and security

LA Legault ⚜️🤌🏻13

Does this mean you will enforce the Canada Health Act on Alberta’s trans 🏳️‍⚧️ bans and speak to this now? xtramagazine.com/power/politi...

Steve "Fascists are Horrible People" Tassie 🇨🇦12

Waving a rainbow flag and gladhanding at Pride events is a long way from making policies that provide protection and opportunities for our 2SLGBTQIA+ communities. UBI and affordable housing would protect our most vulnerable. Your policies and your words don”t match.

Kristi10

At least Carney is trying. Here in the US a Trump Executive Order has declared parents who seek gender care for their kids as child abusers.

Rosa8

Gotta love Mark. Wish my prime minister had his incisive brain & decisive attitude to change.

Peter6

Thank you, Mark. This message would not be posted if PP was PM.

🏴‍☠️DiscordⒶntMuse🏴‍☠️6

You ignore the transphobia in Alberta and schmooze with the person abusing our trans community. Your policies put trans people at risk. Your words mean NOTHING.

Joelle Battram 🇨🇦 🇨🇦 🇨🇦6

Not in Alberta. Municipalities passing #neutrality bylaws. But a pipeline was more important to talk about.

John D ❌👑6

The smiles say it all. You’re doing it right

chomiakofficial.bsky.social4

If this sentiment is true, step away from clowning around with the star of Heated Rivalry and take on Alberta. Then we will know for certain this isn’t just rhetoric.

SharonR_MECFS 🇨🇦3

But AI agents are allowed to be pedos/homophobe/transphobe because AI/Tech firms own the Libs/Cons. U APPROVED discriminatory acts & privacy data breaches allowing surveillance prices. USA is more progressive. A bunch of states looking at banning it starting with Maryland for predatory practices.

Still a Prairie Girl3

Quite the opposite of the Leader of the Opposition

Thank you Prime Minister Carney!

cdnmelody 🇨🇦 🐀🐾🌊🎼♿2

This is wonderful and needed but so is this same level of support for the disabled. Most are in poverty and many are seriously considering MAID because they cannot get the supports they need to live. Help us needed YESTERDAY!!

collburns.bsky.social2

Stop Voting Conservative and things will get a whole lot better!

collburns.bsky.social2

Keep calm and Carney on!!🇨🇦🇨🇦

Tim Goos2

Prime Minister: there are provinces that have invoked the notwithstanding clause to take that promise away. Show your governments commitment by addressing this in a real way.

Alex 🏳️‍🌈✨2

even Alberta? You should probably let Danielle Smith know

Izzy, The Mothman2

Words words words. You have a majority and yet do nothing to actually help the queer community. Lip service and nothing more.

Today is International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia #IDAHOBIT We should be ashamed that this year, the UK has fallen again in the rankings for LGBT+ equality on the ILGA Rainbow map. 🧵

Not we Labour should be ashamed. This drop - the massive drop - this hateful drop - is entirely due to the Labour Party's decisions and choices whilst in government The rest of us are outraged

Kara22

Do you have any comments on, specifically, the current government's efforts to make things worse for queer people?

Stéphanie says… 🏴‍☠️🦈🏍️🎸19

And as a member of the party that has done more to remove legal protections, rights, and medical care from the trans community since coming to power two years ago, you should be ashamed.

naffdoodaa.bsky.social13

I don't have any hope left for change in the UK except for the worse until long after it's too late for me. A lot of people hoped a Labour government would reverse the attacks, but instead intensified them. It's good you're saying something. Wish someone was listening.

Emily Jules12

It doesn't help having the media and a small mumber of bigots, who influence politicians and are backed by billionaire right wing bigots, being transphobic. Just simple things like they don't say trans woman anymore. It's 'born male but identifies as a woman'. It all adds up resuling in hatred.

Rachel Greenham11

there comes a point when you can't be a part of the party that's doing this and claim to be against it.

Jacey is a suitable combo of my actual name for privacy reasons11

Blame Labour, blame your party, just once.

Lycia11

By 'we' I assume you mean Labour, the party responsible for the continued fall?

Kirsty McTear9

Sorry @kateosbornemp.bsky.social , this is indeed on Labour, your party. To correct the flawed (putting it ultra mildly) UKSC FWS verdict, your party could easily amend the 2010 EA to reflect it’s original intent. Your party isn’t doing so. Leading to gross insecurity in the trans community.

Kate Osborne MP8

The map ranks 49 European countries on their respective legal and policy practices for LGBTI people, from 0-100%. The UK is ranked well below the European Union average for LGBT+ equality and congratulations to Spain who have moved into first place leading the way.

18thcenturyboy.bsky.social7

We meaning Starmer and Labour in particular! If you were really ashamed, you would resign or cross the aisle to one of the decent parties in the House (for the avoidance of doubt: not the so-called Conservatives).

evo1963.bsky.social7

The fact that we were better under the Tories is so incredibly showing.

uphill gardner 🇪🇺 🏳️‍🌈 🏳️‍⚧️5

Your party is killing people, Kate

🏳️‍⚧️Contested Issue🏳️‍⚧️5

In terms of legal gender recognition, the UK is now ranked at the very bottom of Europe, alongside russia & Hungary, Thanks to labour. Why don't you mention that?

Holly Brigstocke4

Mainland Europe don't get the UK has no written constitution and we use common law not civil law. This places us higher up the table than we deserve. We should be much lower down. Whatever laws exist on paper I can assure you in practice they don't when you interact with the state.

ClaireHam4

Thanks Kate, although I can’t ignore the fact that Labour are mostly responsible for the continued slide. As a trans woman, I’d have to say that it feels like ILGA have been overly generous to the UK and so I expect further falls as their analysis catches up.

Ellie4

Shame the government aren’t bothering to do anything to fix it and are making it worse instead really isn’t it.

Concerned Person4

We can't take a word of this seriously while you stay in a party devoted to fascism Either go for Leader, cross the aisle to GPEW or accept that remaining in a party full of fascists makes you a fascist & stop being hypocritical The shame is on your party & you stick with them, making shame on you

chazty.bsky.social3

But as an mp you must realise the fall is led by government policies catering to the hateful rhetoric that is prevalent

Léonie Cooper3

Here is my article: leoniecooper.online/terfs/

cr1sp_sandw1ch2

Yes, the Labour Party should be absolutely ashamed of itself. Not only continuing the Tories hostile environment towards trans people, but endorsing and entrenching it. All to appease people who’d never vote Labour anyway.

Stevie2

Within 24 hours we have had a Labour MP decrying hate, another Labour MP refusing to rejoin EU and now a third bemoaning the fact the UK is slipping behind in LGBT+ rankings. You Labour MPs don’t get it. Not in the slightest.

Ch6Red2

Labour too are helping as you lot are also pushing anti-LGBTQ+ bigotry, claim to wanna ban the torture and abuse of LGBTQ+ whilst Wes, Keir etc endorsed it plus you lot have a zero tolerance to discrimination yet don’t act on it, on twitter when it was about bi you failed to check comments and let
