Trump taps private prison executive to oversee US detention policy

newsMay 15, 20269115

President Trump appointed a former GEO Group executive to lead Department of Homeland Security detention policy, moving oversight of immigrant detention toward an industry insider. GEO Group operates private immigration detention centers under contracts with Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and Representative Delia Ramirez (D-Ill.) warned, "Private detention centers that contract with ICE will now run ICE." Critics say the appointment creates a direct conflict of interest that could expand privatized mass detention and change how migrants are detained and overseen in U.S. facilities.
