On May 15, Palestinians and supporters held rallies and memorials worldwide to mark the 78th anniversary of the Nakba. The Nakba refers to the mass expulsion and displacement of Palestinian Arabs during Israel's creation in 1947-49 that produced roughly 700,000 refugees. Events ranged from a new Nakba mural unveiled in Hamburg to criticism in London from a retired Metropolitan Police detective over proposed bans on Palestine marches, alongside vigils at refugee camps and city squares. Commemorations reiterated demands for refugee recognition, the right of return, and attention to ongoing displacement and territorial changes since 1948, issues that continue to affect policy and peace negotiations.
