George Lucas turned 82 on May 14; he was born in Modesto, California, in 1944. Lucas created the Star Wars and Indiana Jones franchises and directed films including THX 1138 and American Graffiti. The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art is expected to open later this year, bringing parts of his collection and exhibitions to the public. His founding of Industrial Light & Magic and his emphasis on visual effects and franchise storytelling reshaped modern blockbuster filmmaking and pop culture.
