SC Supreme Court overturns Alex Murdaugh's murder convictions

newsMay 13, 202618440

The South Carolina Supreme Court overturned Alex Murdaugh's 2023 convictions for the murders of his wife Maggie Murdaugh and son Paul Murdaugh, vacating the verdicts and sending the case back to circuit court for a new trial. The justices found that a county clerk engaged in "shocking jury interference" by communicating with jurors in a way that fatally tainted deliberations. Murdaugh will remain in custody because he previously pleaded guilty to separate embezzlement charges, but prosecutors can seek a retrial on the double-murder counts. The ruling matters because it could produce a new trial that determines guilt on the central murder charges and highlights how improper contact with jurors can undo high-profile convictions.
