SC Supreme Court overturns Alex Murdaugh's murder convictions
The South Carolina Supreme Court overturned Alex Murdaugh's 2023 convictions for the murders of his wife Maggie Murdaugh and son Paul Murdaugh, vacating the verdicts and sending the case back to circuit court for a new trial. The justices found that a county clerk engaged in "shocking jury interference" by communicating with jurors in a way that fatally tainted deliberations. Murdaugh will remain in custody because he previously pleaded guilty to separate embezzlement charges, but prosecutors can seek a retrial on the double-murder counts. The ruling matters because it could produce a new trial that determines guilt on the central murder charges and highlights how improper contact with jurors can undo high-profile convictions.
The South Carolina Supreme Court overturned disgraced attorney Alex Murdaugh’s murder convictions and ordered a new trial in the killing of his wife and son
Goddammit. Now my wife is going to make me watch more documentaries about this.
This was actually the correct ruling. A court clerk tampered with the jury. She’s lucky she’s not going to prison herself for what she did. He’s still serving a 27-year state sentence and 40-year federal sentence for financial crimes and will probably be convicted of murder again. I’m not worried.
You can tell by the comments who read the article and know what Becky Hill did and who is just blindly commenting off a headline
It's a good thing, actually, that court clerks aren't allowed to openly influence juries. He isn't being set free. He's being given a fair trial, because the first one demonstrably wasn't.
WTH. The guys name is literally murder.
Shoutout to being a rich white man. One thing about that community they stick together in their evilness.
Considering all that is going on around us - not surprising. Rich white men win, again. Money talks.
F*cking Becky Hill. The disgraced, former Colleton County Clerk of Court is responsible for this outcome. Wouldn't surprise me if Murdaugh got off this time for murdering his family members to coverup his financial crimes, allegedly. SMDH! #EverythingSucks
BREAKING: South Carolina Supreme Court overturns murder convictions and life sentence for Alex Murdaugh in deaths of wife and son.
The Southern clansmen do protect their criminals, don’t they? 😁😁
Those jurors are trash and were probably paid for
Remains in prison for financial crimes for 40yrs.
This seems like pretty blatant misconduct: "The justices ruled Colleton County Clerk of Court Becky Hill, assigned to oversee the evidence and the jury during the trial, influenced jurors to find Murdaugh guilty.
“But Murdaugh won’t be getting out of prison. The 57-year-old pleaded guilty to stealing around $12 million from his clients and currently is serving a 40-year federal sentence.” - this guy used his powers for evil.
Awful. The rich literally get away with violent murder in USA.
He should write a book called If I did it
Alex Murdaugh — the disgraced former lawyer serving a life term for the murders of his wife and son — will get a new trial in South Carolina, the state Supreme Court said on Wednesday. n.pr/4uKrVWm
I watched the first trial. He's exactly where he should be. Shame on SC.
How many trials does he get before justice is served?
He's a disgusting human being. Killing his wife and son proves he is scum.
WTAF? The evidence was OVERWHELMING. Murdaugh’s attorneys appealed the murder convictions, saying the trial was tainted by a county clerk’s improper comments to jurors, prejudicial evidence and failures at trial. No worries. He will be convicted AGAIN and perhaps THIS time get the Death Penalty. 😅💺⚰️
The correct decision. I think she's already in prison but that clerk should be shot out of a cannon.
This wiki was a hell of a read. Rural white Southerners are fucking evil en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murdaug...
Keep him in jail until the new trial or he’ll leave the country never to return.
He shot his wife and son with an assault rifle in the face, pre-meditated. They have his voice recorded at the scene and time of the murder from his son’s cell phone. UNREAL! 🤯
So yes, Alex Murdaugh is getting a new trial after the South Carolina Supreme Court correctly vacated his convictions. There are two things you need to know about this: first, the South Carolina Supreme Court did NOT say Murdaugh didn't do it. In fact, they didn't opine on the evidence at all!
And second, the Court's decision was almost certainly correct. Here's why. The S. Carolina Supreme Court focused on the Clerk of Court, Rebecca Hill, who wanted to write a book about the Murdaugh trial and told a friend that the book would likely only sell if Murdaugh was found guilty.
I’ll take you over Jonathan Turley as a legal analyst anytime. Thank you. And eff the Clerk, who’ll make the State spend more money for a new trial. Could she go to jail?
South Carolina’s top court overturned murder convictions against Alex Murdaugh, who had been found guilty of killing his wife and son. The decision, in which judges cited jury interference by a court clerk, upends one of America’s highest-profile homicide cases. nyti.ms/4eJ3pQX
Fortunately, this has no bearing on the 40 year sentence he got for being a thief, so there’s that silver lining, he’s not walking out of prison.
Trumps America. Murderers, pedophiles, rapists, drug dealers get a free pass!
Hopefully all the money he stole will ensure he stays in jail regardless.
