Reform UK, largest party in Birmingham vote, says it will not run council

politicsMay 13, 202626130

Reform UK topped the vote in Birmingham's local elections but will not form the city council administration, party councillor Jex Parkin said after other council groups made clear they would not work with the party. The result formed part of a national surge for Reform UK that coincided with sizable losses for both the Conservative and Labour parties while the Liberal Democrats made gains. By declining to run the council, Reform UK leaves Birmingham with a hung council that will require coalitions or minority administrations to manage services and set local policy. The development matters nationally because it highlights that other parties are unwilling to form formal alliances with Reform UK ahead of the next general election.
